I agree. There's a lot of sibling comments to mine saying "You're thinking of F#" or Ocaml or whatever, and from a purely semantic point I agree with them. The problem is, where the hell is the enthusiasm for those langu

Kafka (along with zookeeper) really isn't that bad to self-host. Ime, it's easy if the org has a half decent infrastructure/configuration as code setup.

Disclaimer, I don't support Musk at all. The thing I don't get is "why"? Did he really have to try and fight the guy over twitter? Why couldn't he say, "thanks for letting me know, I'll look into it",

I use tailscale with subnet routers at work. It's pretty good and mess-free with what it does there.

At the very end of the day, I think some people just don't like JavaScript. At the risk of speaking for people other than myself, a lot of people don't want to write code in JS and if they don't have to, they won't. Fram

I don't think it's nonsensical to use less popular/exotic languages. I prefer to write code in languages that I like to write in, as long as it's a good enough tool for the job. The real problem with them is that while y

In my experience, the servers that hosted an application before it was in a container was much more insecure. An unfortunate amount of companies don't patch servers or upgrade the OS over time. In the past year, I've worked with S

I had a great time writing common lisp for the better part of 2022, including doing about half of Advent of Code in it. It's such an awesome language and once you get an understanding of macros, it really does feel powerful. Unfortunat

Agree, it's kind of a pain. There is ALIVE for vscode and VLIME for vim which are fine for just getting started. and more: https://lispcookbook.github.io/cl-cookbook/editor-support.ht...

I will say, using VLIME with vim is pretty nice as well. Once you get the keys memorized, you mostly match an Emacs/SLIME experience.

The implication of using K8s to avoid vendor lock-in might also lead to self-hosting your databases and other supporting software. In this case, you're just standing up normal servers in the cloud, which is pretty trivial in all of the

I started with exercism for rust, and then Zero2Prod. Through Zero2Prod, it's very nice to see how easy the rust ecosystem makes it to do "high level" web programming with minimal friction. The type system makes Domain modeli

I don't blame you. Take home assignments are ridiculous, anyway. My personal time is valuable to me and it's unrealistic to expect me to do homework just for the privilege of an interview. In my last job hunt, I flat out declined

"natural bodily processes" are disrupted all the time for the benefit of the individual. I'd be interested in some scholarly sources regarding the efficacy of the information you're describing.

Might be good to note as well that steroids are commonly prescribed for all kinds of ailments that people have, they're objectively healthcare as well.

Steroids are healthcare, and they are legitimately used for treatment of ailments. Plastic Surgery is healthcare, as it can help treat mental disorders affected by body dysmorphia. Additionally, plastic surgery is much, much more common tha

I think it's less of Mac hardware specifically, and more of the quality of their hardware. The best Linux users can do (for a laptop) is a Thinkpad (as they officially have support from Lenovo) or one of the more boutique brands (syste
