In my experience, the servers that hosted an application before it was in a container was much more insecure. An unfortunate amount of companies don't patch servers or upgrade the OS over time.
In the past year, I've worked with Solaris from 2005 and CentOS 5, and migrated them to either Kubernetes or modern CentOS versions.
