Apparently Android is not using Java, but something that looks like Java. I bet Google vs. Oracle trial can be attributed to that. :)

Because most of big and horrendeous systems are written in them. And maintaining such systems is a PITA. And Ruby/Python are much more productive.

i guess stuff like EJB, JMS. Spring is kinda lightweight compared to those frameworks/platforms.
