Dropbox doesn't offer great encryption because the service is meant to make it very easy to share files and not a secure repository for your things. The gripe is like someone saying "this axe doesn't cut butter very well"

Why are there so many articles about women in tech? I think it's just a wish of some guys in tech to have more women around. If it's just diversity we're after let's get some black and hispanic people among the ranks. I've worked with a lot

If you're too busy to get a date, you're too busy to go on one. Relationships are hard. Even purely sexual ones take time and effort.

My hiatus from HN didn't last as long as I thought :) I don't think there's any correlation between my past posts and the candidate search. The most important thing I'm looking for is that they think this stuff is cool and they are motivate

I don't doubt that companies are trying to get a piece of legislation passed that allows them to pay employees less. Increasing margins, that's what companies do. I do take issue with the idea that the talent shortage is a myth. I work for

It's true only from your world view. You should have titled the post "Git is hard for me" but it would have attracted less eyeballs. I'm a daily user of Git interacting with thousands of developers committing against the same repo. Here's m

It depends on what you value more. Do you want as much storage as possible and not care about redundancy? Then RAID 0 or JBOD would give you a lot of space. I wouldn't recommend it myself but it's an option. If you care about redundancy but

Just SSH and the built in screen sharing app since it's headless and just sits on a shelf. Admittedly my needs are easily met. I really just wanted the following * stream downloaded content to PS3 * host virtual machines for testing (I use

I just bought a Mac Mini and attached some external drives. I run PS3 Media Server for Mac to stream content to my PS3 and app enabled TV. It's not super slick or cool but I don't care. I spend at least 8 hours a day at a Linux or Solaris t

Would you have stumbled on it if it weren't? I know I wouldn't have. The internet can be too focused sometimes and we lose out on a lot of serendipity as a result.

Instead of attacking the NYT, why not just let another paper do the same test with the same car? There may be an issue with that particular car, the journalist could be bias or the battery may just not perform well in cold weather. It’s har

I haven't followed this thing very closely but has anyone suggested testing this again and trying to reproduce the problem? If someone said my code was faulty, the first thing I do is repro. Why doesn't another newspaper just try the same e

Those guys aren’t ninjas and they aren’t dying out. Blackwater has hired lots of ninjas. A ninja is just some dude who gets paid money to get dirty using the best tech and skills available at the time. If they had Glocks in the 15th century

I have the same complaint regarding gems. They’ve always seemed more brittle than Python modules. I have an operations background so I’m used to supporting these apps rather than writing them but I’ve had a lot more trouble in the package m

There's a pretty good list here http://wiki.python.org/moin/WebFrameworks I'm sure the winners will depend on your needs. Do you need a full stack or not? For me, it's either Django or Flask for Python depending on how much of a framework

If we could turn pedantry into electrical power, geeks on the internet could power the planet forever. The takeaway summed the point up nicely although everyone's arguing over sizeof(int). Sure, there are cases when sizeof(int) is not 4 but

Operations shouldn't develop and Development shouldn't do operations. That isn't to say that Ops can't program. I write a lot of Python to get things done but that's not Development. I'm a sysadmin in a 100% AWS shop. Before I showed up, De

I agree with showing how poorly secured websites are and how easily our information is distributed even when we think it's private. What I don't agree with is their use of DDoS attacks against sites like cia.gov. DDoS attacks are pointless.

"Archiveteam projects are different because we run closely-monitored, highly targeted crawls." Maybe, but does that make robots.txt useless? I don't think so. Your app may do the right thing but who's to say another app isn't? Why should so
