I never ran a BBS (although I thought about it), but I played SRE, BRE, TradeWars, L.O.R.D, and Falcon's Eye. I played SRE the most. Would love to play it again.

Paul used the caged lion metaphor to illustrate differences in freedom in a vivid way. That's it. This freedom disparity is a fact. Don't try to say that "less freedom" implies "sucks" just because the vividness offended your sensibiliti

I had the same thought when I read gruseom's post. His zooming in on your writing style is right on the money. (By the way, I could have begun that last sentence with "I think", but I thought better of it.) This is one thing I struggle w

I agree with the proposition. It's all about not being required to be somewhere doing something. Even if I would be there anyway, it's still significant that I have the flexibility that the reduced restriction affords.

Yes, I've been using Dvorak exclusively for a year or two. Vim was annoying at first, but it's really not too bad. Even if you don't remap the keys the new locations of hjkl make reasonable sense. My question for you Dvorak users is how e

Bingo. I think that's the key. And therein lies the problem. How does one keep a community small and high-quality without losing diversity.

From my previous paragraph: 'The kids can now say, "I don't have to assign more value to green legos just because your game assigns more points to them." Some things still do have a certain degree of intrinsic value, so this won't always wo

Ahhh, I see where you're coming from. I'm really interested in the socio-economic aspects of this, and the article was written in a way that prompted thought from that angle. Since I don't have kids and the concerns that go with them, I t

Maybe the underlying premise is flawed. Maybe it would be better to focus on teaching the children the fact that in this world inequality is unavoidable and how best to deal with it. After all, it's clear from the article that the teacher

Excellent point. This is an excellent lead-in to teach kids that the value they place on things is not intrinsic. Once they start thinking this way, they will discover that by changing the value they assign to things, they can manipulate
