SO is good for getting answers to quick commonly asked questions. If I encounter an error, and can't solve it after a few minutes, I'll usually Google it. More often than not, SO is the first result, offering a quick fix for the problem. I'

It's hard to live on $75k in Manhattan, but you can live fairly comfortably on that salary in other boroughs or NJ. I would be very surprised if the offer hadn't gone up substantially since this post was written. Nowadays, new grad offers f

It's interesting that Microsoft chose to adopt monochrome icons after Mac OS X / iTunes adopted monochrome icons. I'd be curious if Apple's design was a major influence on Microsoft's designers, or if the idea for monochrome icons came prim

On the other hand, having a salary can be quite addicting. Going from making >$100k straight out of school(probably $150k with stock+bonus), to living on $30k (or whatever your 'ramen salary' is) is quite a challenge, especially when yo

It's not fair to take affirmative action solely on family income, as the cost of living varies vastly across the US. $100K in Manhattan is nothing, but can translate to an extremely comfortable lifestyle in rural Texas.

Facebook actually already has an advertising office in NYC right near Grand Central. The news is that they're expanding to include an engineering office in NYC.

I feel exactly the same way. I had the experience of working with a designer on two projects, both of which he gave me pixel-perfect mockups for. One project was an iOS project, the other a web project. Getting the pixels to match up for th

What skills do HFT shops look for in a developer? Do they require finance knowledge, or do they "just" want a rockstar systems hacker who can optimize packet delivery latency by hacking the kernel?

[can't reply directly to your latest comment, so doing it here] 'first year' == new grad? What is the income "ceiling" in this role? And why is supporting trading software bad? What does it entail?

Curious, what was your role, if you don't mind saying? Were you a developer? Did you find the problems you were working on interesting? Would you go back?

That seems really, really low in comparison to Silicon Valley. The typical numbers I've heard thrown around are 90-100k for new CS grads, plus bonuses. Does "Technology Analyst" refer to 'IT guy' or 'developer'? Also, the salary seems reall

Thanks for the suggestions and links! I will definitely read up on some "production" node.js code; this is something I really have not done at all. I've pretty much learned node.js based on a few simple examples, and the API docs. This is p

But what is 'personally identifiable'? Say a patient had a complaint about the cost of a visit, and stormed out of the office saying 'screw you' in the waiting room, and the review noted this. Other patients who were in the waiting room wou

One thing worth noting: Doctors aren't able to respond to reviews at all. If a patient posts a completely baseless, factually untrue review of a doctor, the doctor cannot say anything due to privacy laws regarding the patient. This is in co
