Not much to tell. I was looking at maybe using an RTOS to reduce VoIP jitter. Picked RTEMS on a generic x86 PC, there wasn't a driver for the NICs we were using, so wrote a driver using a FreeBSD driver (for an unrelated chip) as a bas

Oops, I miscalculated the total satellite area; (meant 1e6 x 1e6 = 1e12). To keep everything else the same, replace "each with radiators 1 square kilometer" with "each with radiators of 1,000 square km."

Forgive me, for I am doing an end-run around a HN rule (replying to a reply to a reply). But it seems an entertaining question... > What if you radiated a Sun's worth of energy (10^26 Watts) out of 1 square meter? * Blackbody temper

Let us, per the article's title, do the math... * Total energy consumption = 10^26 watts (hope the caret comes through HN formatting) * Assume some magical generation and transport mechanisms which don't involve energy gradiants (

There are a few issues here... 1. Depending upon context, *any* change to state (network I/O, console I/O, file I/O, environment variables, etc.) is a security vulnerability you can drive a truck through. For example: Foo is

Actually, the CEO has commented several times that he was directing the engineers to revert. As a side note, is seems very unlikely that a company would want to treat a roll-back as a new release and first re-execute an already-run test sui

Sorry, no. From a technical standpoint it's ridiculous. If there's even a minimal amount of error checking, a failed update would be akin to a shotgun blast, not a laser beam. Is it theoretically possible for it to cause just one

50-100 yrs between major overhaul? When's the last time you had to manually top-up or bleed air out of your circulatory system? I'd say that's impressively robust.

I recall it being printer-specific also. Dell laser would do it, Brother (?) wouldn't. There was even an app (Booklet Maker?) for n-up challenged printers. I imagine it's a printer-implemented feature, like duplex, with a very hig

The site seems to have a very odd sprinkling of English headings and words. Not enough for a non-Japanese reader, and no visible option to switch to an English version of the pages, so clearly targeted Japanese-only. Is this common?
