The problem statement says 'ignore friction'. Doesn't that imply the ball's initial energy (when thrown, presumably, but it doesn't matter) is conserved? How, then, will it travel a finite distance, since we are not told of any obstacles?

No, that shows that the optimizer work takes a non-trivial amount of time. Optimizations (how often?) happen after parsing, type-checking and constructing the intermediate representation.

You're probably right; where many see fertile soil for an entertaining conspiracy theory, there may be as little as human forgetfulness. The interesting part is the implications of such omissions, and not the reasons behind them.

I've been searching for an interview with Jimmy Page, where he mentioned this and it's the first I've heard of it, but to no avail. Hence, 'anecdotal'. If I find it, I'll post it here.

I doubt it. Not only phones get increasingly powerful, but the core is also evolving, transitioning to IP and LTE being just around the corner; I believe pilot deployments have already started in the US and Japan.

Just as an anecdotal piece of info: most musicians accept that the human brain can keep track of eleven notes. Beyond that, you can change the scale progression and the transition will be (relatively) smooth to the human ear.

Possibly because there's a subtle but definite difference between an experiment carried out on 51 subjects from which 1 stopped before 300V and one on 50 subjects from which nobody stopped before 300V. I'm not saying that's what happened, b

There's also a huge area which everyone's discounting: research. In it, Google is a beast with some major contributions and hundreds of publications, while Facebook doesn't even exist.

You're not implying that nobody uses F# or IronPython, right? That aside, I'm not in a position to know their motivation behind it, I can only say it's a good move for the FOSS community.

rbanffy is anti-Microsoft, and doesn't waste a second in making it known. It's no use trying to reason or discuss with him about this - others have tried.

First IronPython & IronRuby ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1833772 ) and now this. I have to say, Microsoft is (or seems to be, depending on your philosophical disposition) increasingly embracing FOSS, and that's a very good mov

What's your take on the multitude of software that you buy together with all the README files, Word or PDF documents describing how to use the software, what does it do, and all that jazz? Do we (humans) get to view all that code and see wh
