I suspect the previous poster's metric of innovation was more along the lines of: * developing the first meaningful fully-reusable first stage rocket, and continuing to develop it to the extent that no other launch systems are even in

There's something similar-ish... if you have an Apple TV and install VLC, there's a feature that allows you to upload whole video files across your local network, and then play them directly from the Apple TV. It's a bit les

(Not the previous poster but) for me wth RA2 there's a slickness to the gameplay, the mechanics, the controls, and the graphics. I've tried to get on with RA several times (via OpenRA) but it never quite clicks for me - it feels

I experimented with Cursor over christmas, with writing a simple-ish Swift/SwiftUI app on iOS as the challenge. I can code fairly well in Python, moderately in JS, and almost not at all in Swift. I was using Cursor on a Mac, in paral

I’m not intending to make a typical HN-type snipe, but I’m wondering why (it seems) so many new tools/programs are being released for Mac only at the moment, especially in the ~AI space? For example, is it: - there are specific reasons

The current model of “democracy” in the US —and indeed in most countries— is very arm’s length. In countries with a model closer to direct democracy, Switzerland being the best example I know of, it might be possible to hold a vote about a

I think you’re looking for a conspiracy that’s just not there. It’s just people seeing an idea and jumping on the bandwagon. Plus, if you look at lots of the threads, there are already a pent-up dissatisfaction with the user experience of l

The big difference is that none of these changes were part of a defined strategy to lock the user in to their products and ultimately generate more profit, as with the Bambu example: - Battery management was to handle an issue that was enco

A great post, well worth reading. The principles in the section on 'people' are applicable to any organisation in any industry. I especially liked the simple 'career ladder' example, for a) focussing on mostly on behavi

I'd go further - AirBnB is virtually the poster-child for enshittification. It was so good and so refreshing once upon a time; now it's just another profit-maximising f*k-the-customer corporation.

A personal take is that ad-based businesses exist because there’s no secure widespread reliable approach for micropayments (yet?). The mean value of adverts on a page is in the order of a tiny fraction of a cent per reader, which is presuma
