It's not even "one in ten thousand", I think more often it's just that the people who don't know assume that no one else knows either and don't bother properly asking around.

It's a bad race to the bottom. If everyone and everything in on Spotify, then everyone is happy (so long as Spotify is a benevolent dictator). However, the value to consumers rapidly declines the second something they want is not o

It has always been, and always will be, about convenience first. Pre-Spotify and pre-bandcamp, getting music you could play on multiple devices was hard . Piracy was the only reliable way you could have the same songs on your walkman, your

That's literally what he said, yes. He did imply it would likely not be possible. He said that if it could be captured, it would be an absolutely mind-boggling ROI in terms of energy in vs energy out.

That's because there is no software engineering program, and other engineering programs don't deal with "security" per se.

It's my opinion that the title "Engineer" should be on par with things like "Doctor" or "Lawyer". It should require certification and there should be consequences for claiming to be one if you aren't.

Just replace "software developer" with "self-proclaimed software engineer" in your comment and you'd be spot-on.

A lot of HNers probably have the job title "software engineer" without any of the qualifications of an "engineer"... that's probably why you're being down-voted. But you're not wrong.

It becomes a meaningless word if anyone can just call themselves one. There has to be some standard, some governing body, some degree of rigour applied here.

In Ontario the Professional Engineers ( http://www.peo.on.ca/ ) crack down on unlicensed use of the "Engineer" word in job titles pretty aggressively. The point is that the public should have confidence in engineer

But the point isn't to turn something bad into a valid transaction that is simply unfavourable. The point is to deter the behaviour in the first place, regardless of how much you're willing to pay to do it.

A normal fine simply becomes "the cost of doing business". The point is to deter Google, not to simply add a cost to its activities. Related links: https://rady.ucsd.edu/faculty/directory/gneezy/pu

Not sure why you're being down-voted... without a punitive component to the fine, (i.e. if it were only damages) then Google would have absolutely zero incentive to even pretend to change their ways. They could just pay a small fine,

There's an old saying: "There's profit in confusion." The kick in the teeth, here, is that it appears that rather than expose such profiteers, the institution would rather quietly sweep such incidents under the rug. :(
