"There be three degrees of this hiding and veiling of a man’s self. The first, closeness, reservation, and secrecy; when a man leaveth himself without observation, or without hold to be taken, what he is. The second, dissimulation, in

I love the visual direction, and I think it will work very well for a diverse set of Google products. The style guide is beautifully done and well articulated. In terms of interaction design, however, it doesn't break any new ground, a

It looks nice. However, my biggest complain is that it's playing too safe. So that it feels more like a style guide than a vision. E.g. When the style guide talks about mass and force in animation, I was expecting something much more t

Bluetooth but no pressure sensitivity? Pressure sensitive stylus is the closest thing that emulates drawing on "paper". It's a beautiful stylus, but not a very practical one.

I don't disagree, but I dislike the reasoning. If you truly believe in art (or engineering or plumbing), you do it for yourself, make it happen regardless of whatever "big societal shifts" that may happen in the next 30 years. Don't over-ca

Why is it a strawman? The post is about a certain lifestyle, the comment argues about a different lifestyle. It is a debate about lifestyles. Is it not true that if you spend too much time obsessed about buying things, you'll have less time

I fail to see why mapgrep's position is a strawman. Is it not valid to question the opportunity cost of a lifestyle, in which one is obsessed more about objects than about lives? His tone may be slightly mean, but that doesn't invalidate hi

Is it a bit weird to compare average weekly wage to median square foot price? Shouldn't it be median household income?

Great concept. But some icons (e.g. twitter) render poorly at 16px.

Lots of good thoughts here. Thanks for sharing. I like your example of art as naming the unnamed. It's similar to Paul Klee's "art does not reproduce the visible, it makes visible". I don't think rational/irrational are two separate realms.

Apologies. It doesn't sound right indeed. What I meant is that it takes a certain mindset to appreciate art. Not sure what you mean by "ordinary" language though. If you want to express hunger in a way that is not indifferent, how would you

I was referring to the critiques in the article (e.g. dismissing the works one by one, instead of looking at the retrospective as a whole.) But you raise an interesting point. I'm not sure if groups form because of herd mentality, or if the

Most contemporary artists works need to be appreciated as a whole, not as isolated pieces. The author here looks at trees but misses the forest. Most people look at art as if they are portfolio pieces in dribbble.com. (Hmm, I like this icon

In a sense this is what good designs do. It's a bit about problem solving, and a lot about emotional understanding.

That's lovely. Sometimes I thought of the Innisfree poem while I toiled in front of my computer! Related: Auden wrote a great poem called In Memory of W.B. Yeats. Read by the poet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygjgQt76x5w

This is both stimulating and depressing at the same time. As if there's only one correct way of thinking and communicating. Why conform yourself to someone else's nature? You're not Steve Jobs, and you're not pg, you are yourself -- forget
