I’ll bite. The capability in the US to do large castings and forgings is basically gone. Good luck getting anything with a lead time of less than a couple years. In some cases, it simply can’t be done. That’s why we’re seeing so much invest

Mouse Without Borders has been ubiquitous on all the SEMs I’ve used (where up to three computers can be used together). I’ve never had any problems with it. Now, the SEMs on the other hand…

When people talk about weight in this context, they really mean "base weight" not including consumables or worn clothing/shoes. The general rule of thumb is about 1lb/500g of food per day.

A lot of the code used in scientific computing cannot be vectorized because the latter loop is dependent on the former loop (like time stepping in a simulation). It’s not really a programming style preference.

There are some great government resources for books. Your state almost certainly has something that works with the Library of Congress. https://www.loc.gov/nls/ is a good starting point. You can also search something l

The article somewhat downplays the historical understanding of this. (It's understandable! This is a dense topic!) The impact of spin states has been known for a looong time. My first introduction to the topic was Zener's 1955 pap

Film cooling and coatings are what allow operating temperatures above the melting temperature. That doesn’t mean the metal is above its melting temperature.

It’s definitely an expense. But this doesn’t fully explain why nuclear is expensive. -Current nuclear reactors aren’t nearly hot enough to need single crystal turbine blisks. We’re talking on the order of 300°C. -Coal power plant routinely

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of polymers was only in its infancy in the late 80s. This was research out of UT Austin that would eventually lead to DTM. Proper L-PBF of metals (fully melted, fully dense parts) didn't come about until
