Counterpoint of one, my dad's in in his 70s, and seems sharp as ever. Last summer, he took upon a project of building a protocol converter between a GPS device and some kind of sailing computer in his sailboat. I politely listened to

Yeah. I mostly left Twitter about 9 years ago (!) for the same reasons. I wonder if a celebrity like Musk is overestimating how important Twitter really is. Because in my view, it's a cesspool of self-promoters, hate, corporate marke

I guess it’s no surprise that a shorter wavelength kills more stuff. That said, I’m not super convinced that it’s safe, if it’s not something we normally have in our environment… the stuff being killed might be you.

Interesting that you see yourself as being more employable. And if you say so, probably it's true! So, I'm wondering what you bring to the teams you're hired into. When I hire, staying at previous jobs for only 1—2 years i

Wasn't there a study or two that living on the western edge of a time zone poses higher health risks, presumably because people have to get up before sunrise to get to work. This why I, personally, would prefer standard time over DST.

Doesn’t that mean you should prefer standard time? DST moves the clock forwards, so the sun won’t be as high at, say, 7am.

My vote goes to the “Org Too Big, Nobody Cares” explanation. Or, perhaps, just the blissful America-centric ignorance about how there are regions in the world with multiple official languages. Haven't checked this recently, but a while

Perhaps try a different brand. The one I usually get lists milk, cream, whey, salt, carob powder, citric acid, and culture. So fermented milk products plus a bit of things to make it more stable.

I used rsync 20 years ago, switched to Borg, then switched to Restic. It’s nice to send backups to destinations like B2 or S3 without any special requirements. But the Hetzner Storage Box is good deal. Now all I need is better client side

Building software is typically a process of discovery. Usually you don’t know beforehand exactly what code you need to write, even if it was crystal clear what the requirements are. So as you explore the space of programs that solve your pr

Even if it's all documented with a README, with container images and Ansible playbooks or whatever to make it all happen… still people will be complaining that it's oh so complex and that's not how we did it in my previous j

It tells the agent to confirm each use of a key using ssh-askpass. The same can be achieved with the -c option for ssh-add. If the confirmation dialog really also showed a host name then yeah, this is not strictly the same. But it's

No need for a modified agent, just put this in your ~/.ssh/config: AddKeysToAgent confirm You may need to separately install ssh-askpass.

You're right that the language isn't to blame as such. But if a change like this doesn't cause some kind of uproar in the Ruby community, then the community has a problem.

This is the correct answer ;) If you're going to run a serious internal network, you'll need the basic things like NTP, DNS, a CA server, and, yes, some kind of MDM to distribute internal CA certificates to your people. The real

I think the karma from a story is more or less capped to the number of comments on the story. At the same time, a story which gets more comments than upvotes quickly vanishes from the front page. Both modulo moderation, of course.
