We're essentially a nicely designed web-based irc interface with integrated hosted bouncer. You don't usually get that for free afaik, you'd have to run a bouncer yourself on a vps or something, or attach to screen and use irssi. Plenty of

My favourite prompt-hack is to colourise the $ when the previous command exits non-zero, here's how I have my bash PS1 set up: http://www.metabrew.com/article/updated-bash-ps1 If you exit `top` by pressing q, it exits with non-zero - who

Seems like everyone trying out node.js for the first time wants to make chat-room apps. At least this one doesn't have an immediately obvious script injection vulnerability :) Interestingly, none of the chat apps I've really used are built

Cool. There are a few disparate erlang implementation right now. Misultin has one, zotonic has one, I patched mochiweb to support websockets on the same port too: https://github.com/RJ/mochiweb

C1M is the new C10K. C10K is not even close to being a real problem any more. I expect my phone can handle 10K connections. Making a million outbound connections, on the other hand, requires a little more care. Mostly because you need 16+ I

I'm the one quoted there (RJ). It's worth pointing out that I've not worked at Last.fm for a couple of years, and the chat log (which I posted) doesn't mention Last.fm at all. That said, I still think my analysis is bang on. What Apple have

This is insane and should be cause for extreme suspicion.. As a sysadmin if someone asks you to do this, the correct response is "haha not likely", and at the very least confirm their identity - call them or something. Don't sent the passwo

That's a pretty good idea - you could probably recreate the delicious network feed by federating couches. I could replicate my friends' couchdbs into mine in a mesh network topology and create my own network feed.

It works because the translator can write template code that is executed by the templating engine at runtime, so the translator can write something like this as the translation: {switch $d} {case 1} foo {$d}... {case 2} {$d} bar..

At Last.fm we used PHP+Smarty with a gettext-esque pre-compilation step (a bit like IntSmarty) for templates that allowed translators to embed smarty templating code, so you could write this in smarty: {l}Found {$d} directories{/l} a

Riak has "windowed merges", ie you can schedule compaction at your off-peak times. Or not at all, I guess, if you never delete or modify existing data.

Yes you can trigger updates just by doing this in most cases: sys:suspend(Pid), {module, my_module} = code:load_file(my_module), sys:change_code(Pid, my_module, undefined, [], 10000), sys:resume(Pid); But you still need a way to do that for
