I said nothing about ads, rather that it's hard to raise money so charging is almost a must. About ads, FriendFAQ is killing it on Facebook. Friends that run content sites say ad payouts are down, affiliate companies are killing it.

It's probably not a good idea not to copy other companies, rather analyze what's working them and see if you can make it work for you as well. 37Signals gives a ton of good advice when it comes to running a web service, and some not so good

Every time we have looked at a class A lease, the leasing agent has pushed for a minimum term of 3 years. When we looked at executive offices the lease term was really short but the cost/sqft was really high.
