About 100k people seem to live there, I assume many of them with kids. I lived for different periods of a few years in two cities of similar structure and size of ancient Florence and Atlanta, and found the quality of life to be much higher

I would suspect atomic weapons scale much more easily than cities. Even if that wasn't the case, assuming the target is the commercial center of a city you don't even have to use more powerful warheads. I see a much less scary, bu

It could be that the current method (i.e. human solves it by making a decision for each item) could be proved to give an optimal solution. However, if that is not the case, the hardest part will be to get the right model. There are very com

the optimum is always at a vertex As you point out in [2], it would be more correct to say that among the optimal solutions there is always one at a vertex of the polyhedron</nitpicking> Also, simplex methods are very versatile

Of the 100 academicians I know (applied math), only a dozen published books and collect royalties. Some of them joke about getting the occasional check of a few dollars every year. These are senior US professors whose salary is good enough

Not sure why you're being downvoted, what you say is similar for applied math. Since a couple of years ago some publishers are asking the LaTeX source and the figures to avoid their own typesetting (save for the journal's LaTeX st

If the collapsing part of the system is the one containing middlemen who earn millions taking advantage of free labor from academicians, it will be a success. The only current effect of sci-hub is that research is really open.

If you really want the single best solution, you're stuck with checking all N! solutions. Agree with lotharbot here. You are as stuck with checking all N! solutions as a sorting algorithm would be. A good TSP algorithm won't,

But sorting has a known O(N log N) algorithm. Nobody sorts by comparing all N! permutations and picking the correct one. (Well, I certainly don't.) That is precisely the point of the blog post. Nobody compares all N! permutation for

But ant colony algorithms are heuristics. The Concorde software by Cook and co., that is mentioned in the blog post, obtains an optimal solution.

I think this is just one of the pitfalls that the author points out: it is not the sheer number of possibilities that defines the difficulty of a problem. He links to his previous blog post http://mat.tepper.cmu.edu/blog

Agreed, but all taxpayers fund only a portion of the worldwide research and benefit from all of it, so the trade-off is still in favor of sharing.

For instance, a major part of scientific research is done in US, isn't it? A good part, roughly on par with Europe, Japan, Russia, and China (number of papers is hardly a measure of scientific production anyway): https://w

Most of the problems listed in this article are, in my opinion, only temporary and would be solved if the technology becomes widespread. As in many technological shifts, what is required is either 1) evolved technology or 2) demand (which w

One stop-gap hybrid solution for a number of these issues would be a gas station that has a small power generation station powered by diesel fuel. This would cancel out the ecological benefits of running an EV, even if the power station h

It is not news that complaints are ignored, but it is good news that somebody is raising awareness about it. It is only useful if it appears on HN.
