You know, given the context, I'm going to throw out a spurious analogy: Maybe writing a blog bears some small resemblance to doing a startup. It takes more time than is reasonable, in the average case nobody else really notices, and once in

Out of interest, is there any persistent archive of these smaller items on paulgraham.com? There's this, and there's the one about the cool construction charity, and I'm guessing there are more I've missed from before I was a regular News.Y

I think what drinko is asking is what sort of web app you're working up. The type/function/target market will help people gauge what's appropriate. It's probably worth the risk to your confidentiality...

My suggestion is to use what you have - play your home for its comparative advantage. What have you got? You might not have a strong local VC community, but you do have something the Valley doesn't - a very low relative cost of living. Wi

So...Skype dropped the ball (didn't develop a mobile client), got their asses handed to them (by iSkoot, which did, and got a Hutchison partnership out of it) - and then decided to catch up cheap by making their own, rather than buying the

Granted - but the important point edw519 is getting at, I'd say, is that getting close to clients is a way of reducing the problem from thinking of an idea de novo to filtering out the good ones. I'd count that as a major win. Unfortunate

The overall impression I'm getting from this post is that this product you've created works, but you don't believe in the business case for it. You seem to have at least one other project about which you're passionate, and which you would b

Actually, that was a custom app built on the tcl httpd (whose procs-as-paths structure was a revelation to me at the time). I also did some fun things like a Java-style try/catch/finally system, which was useful when playing with xmlrpc. (P

Okay, okay, I'll bite. Hear me, before the rotten tomatoes hit: I. like. TCL. In fact, I'm going to go out on a dangerous limb and say that complaining about the [expr] syntax - which seems to be his only concrete complaint in the whole art

The idea itself looks cool, but the main page lacks focus. Might I suggest a prominent path to a quick demo - free registration will put off any casual user, whereas if there were an easy "conveyor belt" taking you through the steps of buil
