Information reduces uncertainty. A lot of talking or a lot of misinformation does not increase information but noise.

I found the concepts that help a lot in discussing this in its essence are equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome.

Open source has a specific meaning clarified in each license (like truffle, truffle-flavoured in food). Each license is unambiguous about what one is allowed to do. Some licenses favor the freedom of the user, and some the freedom of the de

Similarly to carbon costs and derivatives, we can go as far back as we want (carbon cost since big bang, since factory, or from the store) or examine the consequences into the future or alternative timelines (opportunity cost). It is an int

More like a friend of a friend, then :) From whom you have heard many anecdotes, have common friends, and you feel like you know them. You are curious to meet them.

I wonder how much the amount of data transfer costs (for training or finetuning) might be a big on top of that. I am assuming ingress costs are relatively cheap in most services (as in AWS).

I agree with you about the worse type system not being a feature. Also missing the json features of postgres is inconvenient. Only one file to backup or deploy is the biggest advantage of sqlite IMO.

Or you could use sqlite until you need postgres. I have to admit I reach for postgres immediately when in many cases sqlite would have served me just as well.

Did you see all those "where can I buy this flavor of snack in $location", or some weird anecdote involving a flavor of chips or similar. Tons of astroturfing on reddit. I notice a lot of talking past each other in only tangential

IMO there is some lack of information on this. Especially in how the on-socket RAM performs in combination with the GPU. If anybody using llama or Stable diffusion with such a setup could share their experience vs a more traditional Nvidia

Adding to other advice here: make sure you know how much salary will be in your pocket after taxes and living expenses. Switzerland is an expensive country, and comparing just the absolute number could make you feel very miserable once you

IMO, there is this common habit in lesswrong of creating new words that sound smart, as if they cannot "stop trying to make it a thing". If justified, I don't normally see a problem with that (like fractal, from Mandelbrot).

I see your point but I respectfully disagree. It seems to me you are taking only maximum absolute dollar into account. 50k€ or less in Europe is more like $100k in my experience. Assumptions: - Comparing salaries in absolute dollar amount,

Elm does have a escape hatch: ports. You could use ports to call any javascript library. I have done it and it works. Ports are needed because they make any js code go through the same "even router" than any Elm code. It works ver

That is exactly what I meant with you have to roll your own of everything. The building blocks for this one are there. Elm could have server side rendering too, like nextjs. That is IMO way worse.

Elm is pretty much finished (meaning feature-complete) IMO. Not much needs to be changed. I love Elm. I can always go back to a project and get back on it in 2 minutes. The compiler is superb. The problem is one must roll on their own almos

You can control click or middle click on a link. Most websites only open external links on a new window/tab because they don‘t want you to leave to monetize you further. Maybe hn does not care as much, which is good IMO.

IDK, I remember seeing a tweet from Paul Graham saying that any new startup should use Typescript (I guess instead of js) so there might be some rules of thumb that some investors follow.
