That's not the argument I was making. I would much prefer that NYT make it harder to get in, and not assume their customers are idiots.

Nor is it my first thought. But, nobody's asking me to pay to use the lawn in that case, so I don't find it a particularly compelling analogy. If the sign said something like "Please pay $1 to use the lawn" I might find it similarly insul

I've recently heard good things about Hover. https://www.hover.com/ I'm still using Dotster. They're not awesome, and they're not the cheapest, but they've never done anything that would make me want to leave, either.

To this day I am still surprised at how easy it is to circumvent the paywall. I find it a bit insulting to my intelligence, to be honest.

Those two months are the best summer you'll find anywhere. When I moved to SF, I missed them dearly. SF summers are terrible, and I found three of them more depressing than seven rainy winters in Seattle ever were. I'll also take nonstop

Yes, this. An old roommate of mine who was a Seattle-area native called it "spitting drizzle". It's like an agressive fog.

No it doesn't. Seattle has some of the best summers anywhere; it's one of the city's best-kept secrets. July and August are gorgeous. The relentless gray of which you speak is true of months like December and January.

This makes a lot of sense to me, and might explain what's going on with the puzzling uses of "fire drill" I've witnessed in recent years. I almost want to say that there's been a shift in jargon going on, because I feel like I hear people

Hm, ok. That's not been my experience. For example, I have definitely heard it used in Operations contexts to describe broken shit that needs fixing now -- things that are real problems and not drills. "Drill" to me implies preparation f

Agreed. What I notice at my current employer is that trying to avoid pulling people into meetings results in what I call "Development by game of Telephone", where software requirements become rumors passed between employees. (Even when requ

I've never quit Twitter for more than a week, but I don't hesitate to unfollow people when I decide I am tired of their tweets, and I don't engage in silly behaviors like following back indiscriminately. I do similar pruning of the RSS fee
