I think that is by design due to reflection needs. Hard to prune unused code when it might be called reflectively at any time.

If you're doing green field JVM developer and NOT using big frameworks like Spring or an app server it is pretty safe to use the intermediate releases.

Basically there's six month feature releases but every five or six releases there's going to be an LTS release. Most companies use the LTS releases. Next big LTS release is later this year.

The trend towards killing desktop individualism started with Steve Jobs and Mac OS X Aqua interface. Making computing “pretty” became the imperative design criteria. That meant heavily curtailing what things people could customize.

Your last comment nails it. But I think its also a Hn trope at this point to have a huge blindspot for social platforms and media companies... the demographic here tends to not grok their value appeal to the broader public. Basically if you

What is up with the comments in this thread? Feels like tons of them are bot written. Weird attacks on Bill Gates and Microsoft all over the place.

I dont know how you’re productive with VS Code and Go... I watch my coworkers live code with it sometimes and they are struggling. The lang server crashes constantly and stuff like autoimports or code complete barely works. I sometimes want

What's the use case for something like "VMWare on Google Compute" is it just a API shim to translate VMWare API calls to GCE for companies that are trying to lift and shift to the cloud?

Portability is not important in most cases. Most shell scripts are written for and run on a single platform usually as setup or teardown for something else.

I used fish for a couple years but switched back to zsh. I found the incompatibilities with bash/zsh to be annoying at times and finally just decided to do the "When in Rome do as the Romans" do thing and adopt zsh.

I keep eyeballing the railroad track but that feels like HO and not O guage. The track spacing doesn’t look right for O, also in 1961 im not sure two rail O gauge would be common... O usually has a third rail. Could also be OO gauge, but th

I mentioned this in a different comment. Its a major tech hub, but not in a way that would be apparent to your average HN software dev. Boston/Cambridge is THE bioengineering hub of the US.

Bostons a life sciences hub and basically the only game in town for serious bioengineering. Different ballgame compared to the kind of tech that gets talked about on HN usually which is basically B2B or B2C SaaS.

Freedom implies many different things to people. Freedom to choose not to live in this company town is an option. The freedom to not do something is basically the only freedom Americans consistently apply to things usually.
