Private entities are horrible at self-regulating. They are equally horrible at creating their own laws to selectively apply to users of their platform, in addition to laws of the location of the user. This law effectively diminishes the abi

Do you think the risks of taking antidepressants are worth the benefits? I suffer from depression, but I’m afraid I might do some serious damage if I go on meds.

Yeah, but you can’t put an end to violence, and violence serves an incredible biological purpose. Racism will never cease to exist, nor should society try to force it away, since that will only make things worse. Perhaps racism even serves

Even if there were illegal content, couldn’t it be distributed and encrypted on the host machines in such a way that there would be no liability for hosters? Imagine the hosts only possess encrypted file fragments, rather than unencrypted w

It looks like a pretty cool horror game—the screenshots remind me of Amnesia. It’s seriously a shame that publishers are censoring the game and denying revenue to hardworking devs for something as innocuous as an amulet with the expression

I was trying to make sense of this... people unable to find clinics to get their second dose (or maybe too many doses?) because of their outdated GPS.

This is just rich. I don’t know what’s funnier: Kazakhstan’s overt, bush league attempt at surveillance using certificates, or the virtue signaling by the Big N’s who surveil us daily at the behest of Uncle Sam.

TLDR; the author has a certain dark mode preference and is making it known to the world. Dark is dark. Personally, I’ll take any shade of dark over any shade of light. The real question is... when will HN get dark mode? :)

I don’t think this is necessarily true anymore. Today we have much more intuitive tools at our disposable such as vscode. I understand some people were raised on grep and vim, and it is like a second nature to them, but actively encouraging

How is this different from Apple/Google requiring iPhone/Android users to create iCloud/Google accounts to use most features on the phones? They should be subject to similar probes.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, personally. On the one hand, this is awesome for people who might actually still use this archaic piece of software. On the other hand, it seems like a waste of resources that could be better spent o

I believe the US government is actively undermining products that don't have such backdoors. For example, the US DoD now classifies JetBrains products as prohibited, which trickles down from the 2020 National Defense Authorization Ac
