I mentioned this in another comment, but I've set off the explosives detector before and had a very similar experience as the original link (taken to a side room, questioned, etc). This is as a white male, although it was in Australia

I've had this happen to me before as well, but in Australia, and the similarities and differences are interesting. I set off the explosive scanner for TNT when flying to see my family at Christmas (and was told straight away what I was

Not much has been made of the fact that skips count as plays... I wonder what proportion of plays are skips. Does anyone have information on what a radio station pays for one play of a song, when they have an audience of, say, 100,000? Edit

There's a difference between asking an interviewee to implement an obscure data structure and knowing your basic algorithms and knowing how much complexity is added by using certain data structures. i.e. I'd expect any coder to u

Good points, but regarding moving states - that doesn't address large federal taxes, or taxes on things that aren't taxed in other countries (death tax, gift tax).

Fair enough point - but they do mention some specific examples of people that obviously have a high net worth and have a _lot_ to lose by these tax laws. I assume that anyone giving up their citizenship has enough to lose to make that wort

It's not as simple as saying it's a 'low-tax country compared to Australia'. Perhaps in some states, but not all. The tax I pay in California is very comparable to the tax I paid in Australia. Meanwhile, living in Australia I had to file

Where do you get the 0.002% figure from? The number of people divided by the population of the US? If so, that's not a meaningful figure - you should be examining the tax they would pay compared to the tax base, which could be many times

Ah of course, I thought it was truncated. Using my German to translate Dutch, not always successful :) Love the similarities, "Kammer" means "compartment" or "small room" in German.

These stories always seem to fit a very nice narrative, using anecdotal evidence to back up what we think sounds right... I would love to see some actual scientific study on this. I've no doubt that we're not sleeping optimally at the momen

Hey, no fair taking away this part of my comment! "(or it's not very common at least)" But when you say "40% of all land is lease hold" - are you talking all land now? I was talking about residential housing, and should have made it cleare

The property market underwent a huge decade plus long boom in Australia, with land prices rising astronomically. There are all sorts of rules for land development in place, and limited availability for development in the major cities. It'

We don't have yearly property taxes in Australia, just council rates which are usually around 0.2% of the house valuation (which is much lower than in the US AFAIK). However we don't have the split land/house purchasing like in the UK (or

But it's not as clear cut that this is a 'negative' aspect of human nature, and I would strongly argue that infidelity is NOT necessarily human nature, at least not as fundamentally as gift giving / signaling. And you're moving the argument
