TBH we don't use AV on the server. Tend do do it on the client machines or not at all if it's a Linux machine (mutt).

Yes fully accurate. By DEFAULT it does local+global search. Motivation for user to turn this off - low. Education on what it's going to do - none. This is about as unethical as it can get. Even Windows 8 asks religiously before sending anyt

Not quite. It depends on the context. This was a pointer to issues, none of which are supporting the argument but are of secondary interest.

Local searches do not remain private as there is only one search box for global and local stuff. So when you type "goat porn" expecting it to open your folder of goat porn on your workstation, it will send it to amazon and show goat porn th

It's actually not rhetoric - it's a play on Bradbury's comment about e-readers "smelling like burned fuel" (read Fahrenheit 451 for the background of this). I own a Kobo, but it's been seriously hacked by myself so it doesn't call home and

You'll most likely be ok. The main attack vector is a chunk of regularly used usernames and a small selection of passwords. These are quite successful against shared hosting where password quality is hard to control properly. If you've got

+1 for this. I've run my own mail server for 15 years, since I got my first permanent connection. I host on the end of it as I have a large distrust of "the cloud". It is cost effective for me as it has increased my merchantable skill p

A big chunk of your energy will disappear in heat via resistance unless you run silver wire everywhere or keep the runs short. DC cabling has some weird voltage divider and load characteristics as well causing drop outs. This is particularl

However, I think everyone knows someone who can fix it. There is something to be said for ubiquity. Although it is annoying being family tech support.

If I give someone an iPad, I can be 99% certain they won't make it unusable or full of viruses in a month. Have you seen the average person's Windows desktop? I'm not sure that's a magic bullet. Amongst my family and friends at least, I h

I have doom on my TI Nspire CAS :) Unfortunately the crappy screen is no good for playing it. I've seen all sorts of hacks like this over the years but to be honest, I've fallen in love with the HP50g for hackability. The thing is awesome.

Well it looks like I'm going to be dead by the time they send something interesting there. Back in the days of Apollo, they risked a hell of a lot in the name of exploration. It'd be nice to see the same spirit applied to Mars.

Yes - a good side effect. I reckon my T61 wouldn't get nicked and can quite happily use it on a train out of London even at night without being fussed. The same could not be said for a MacBook which just has "mug me" written on it.
