I've had these guys loads of times. "We're from Windows" Pretending you are partially deaf and old keeps them on the line a while. 6 minutes is my record so far :)

Is there some link with geeks and explosives? In my youth, if a large bang was heard across the town or smoke was spotted, I was always asked if it was my fault :) (a lot of the time it was :)

I had the same trouble. Just feels clunky. Fortunately they managed to use hype to offset it.

I think that's probably a waste of time. We've only had one visitor on windows 8 and after doing a reverse lookup on the IP, it turned out to be coming from us and was a member of our QA team.

I personally just don't want to invest my time in it. Either way, if I'm going to push something, its going to be over HTTP and not platform tied.

Regarding your latter point, I think this comes from the exposure of technology increasing every day. I've built and operated a helpdesk for a 150,000 employee organisation with a high security requirement. People bash the IT guys because t

Very true. Right there now. We have a lot of huge clients and are an enterprise SaaS. The killer for us is having not automated QA up front. The manual monkeys with typewriters approach is killing us.

Agree with this a million times over. I do actually use an e-reader (Kobo touch) but it's been hacked to register and remove any network access possibility and only gets DRM free epubs and PDFs put near it.

No thanks - sticky back plastic is far more versatile. Annotations with diagrams finely written with pencil or smudged around with a lopping great big finger? Not possible with certain DRM encumbered digital copies. It was more of a point t

No one cares about this until about 3 months in at which point they are going to have to put up with it. This is why known a kobo and a computer and nothing else. You just can't read on a backlit device.

Yes we were. We covered them, scribbled on them, wrote errata in, copied pages for people, ripped out pages, occasionally watched nitric acid dissolve them, accidentally set them on fire, sold them and swapped them for other things and occa

Well they shot themselves there. The CLR was supposed to be the portability layer i.e. IL code would be dynamically compiled. Unfortunately due to Microsoft's schizophrenia, it never became a first class part of the OS over say non-portable

Yes but they were only available to one user and that could only log in via the console server. Joy to ACLs, custom Solaris builds and proper kit (ultra enterprise units the size of a full 42u rack). I miss those days.

Try Debian stable. I've had a single installation last for 13 years so far. New and shiny is considerably less important than working and tested the first time something breaks.

Sorry I should have clarified the point up front: The initial configuration is tiresome and complicated. While knowing the details is important, using them as a barrier to entry i.e. by removing the arch installer is just a hideous waste of

I had the same thing with my T61. It was due to the sense wire on the fan being crimped slightly between the keyboard and roll cage assembly. I managed to fix it with some wiggling of the wire without resorting to fan control software. I al

I've got a 10 year old T-series (Think its a T21) in the cupboard. It did 7 years service for the original user for 4-5 hours a day. It was dropped and bashed around regularly. I only keep it because it has a real serial and parallel port b

No one I know uses Visio any more. They all seem to use PowerPoint for diagramming. Why? Because you have to pay more for Visio and to be honest Visio is horrible. I use dia over Visio - it's a much stronger product.
