Bizarre, instead of simply hiring a couple of translators at $0.10 a word, they build a tool to let users translate the site. How many words of copy does twitter.com have anyway? I count less than 100 on the frontpage. And it's not just twi

It may seem boring to them, but we know that it isn't - at all. To me, chemistry seems boring. It's a problem of perception. I can easily imagine a society where 90%+ of the programmers are women, where programming is thought of as a typica

Isn't detecting mosquitos much harder than killing them? How do they solve that? Echolocation? I'd love to win the war against malaria with robats!

I do that too, but it doesn't work perfectly. For instance, how do you select all your tracks with genre Game, without also getting "Love is a losing game", or creating a smart playlist.

I think that gadget makers are underestimating the intensity of the emotions involved when a gadget is stolen. We have a strong sense of justice that's disproportionate to the actual value of the gadget. I know that I feel better about my i

I wonder what 10.7 will be called - we're running out of cats with acceptable names (Andean Mountain Cat won't do). What's left: Lynx, Cougar, Puma, and of course, Lion. Apparently, a panther is not a species, but refers to a cougar, a puma

Evolution is essentially an algorithm. That's why we can use logic to predict that genes that regulate behavior for "less successful individuals to slink away and accept starvation" are unlikely to arise, since not a single one of the ances

Pfff. Show password technology is here today: type password, select all, cut, type username, tab, paste, enter. But I want the option to mask the password. I prefer the OSX wifi password dialog, with a checkbox to show the password that's

I love this article, although it also discourages me. How could I possibly create such a company? How could I ever find one? His point about the second type of company touched a nerve: that's me, to a tee. It's an article from 2006, so the

The problem with parsing Roman numerals is that, unlike the decimal system, there are many permutations of digits that are illegal. That is, you can't say, let's party like it's MIM, or even MICM, no, you have to say MCMXCIX. The problem wi

I read the same thing in "Clean Code" (amazon: http://is.gd/mJ8g ) I have two objections: First, what is "one thing"? Render a Doom 3 frame? Or increment the "i" variable? The "Clean Code" author argued that a log statement or a try/catch
