Very interesting : I was actually thinking about redoing the spectrometer music visualization for MythTV to be use 'piano keyboard' pitches (rather than the FFT that they're using at the moment). And I came to the conclusion that some kind

Not explicitly stated in the article : The reason this is so fast is that you're only detecting a single frequency. If you wanted to detect a few (M, say), you'd have to keep updating M sets of Qs. While M<<N this is really effici

This is a spoof letter created by The Borowitz Report - http://www.borowitzreport.com/ - which is the one humourous ~daily email I look forward to reading.

Rather than signing requests for the (largish) javascript file (which would benefit most from being cached), it would make more sense for the signed-timestamp key to be passed as one parameter via the image grab. Or am I missing something?

The E-2 also involves a catch-22 : To show that you're serious about building a business, they require you to show that you have (for instance) a commercial rental lined up. Other things (such as potential employees, letters of intent, ban

Maybe you're familiar with the trickle-down theory (whereby the rich are the wealth-creators, so they should be encouraged with low tax rates) : That line of thinking should have you advocating that people with high intelligence should be s

On the book : The tone is a lot more like a 'Management Book' than the (very engaging) blog and videos. If you'd like to dig out the content yourself, to see whether it's just self-advertising, start with : http://www.startuplessonslearne

In the past, people have cited the presence of Wall Street being the thing that prevented the 'pure tech' startup scene from developing - since Wall St paid developers too well. The real eye-opener for me was how crowded and positive the St

Somewhat infuriatingly, my simple IR->"Intermediate Representation" was my highest ever scoring comment, and the one that pushed me over 500... Lesson learned : Make something people want.

LLVM IR = "Low Level Virtual Machine" (originally written to be a replacement for the existing code generator in the GCC stack) "Intermediate Representation" (virtual machine language, prior to being crunched into actual machine code).

Can someone from the company give an explanation as to why there is no pricing information available on the front page? Was there A/B testing done on whether to provide it? I'm asking, because the simple sign-up popup requires me to agree

Right now, it looks like a special tribute : The whole of the front page (30 stories) are all Jobs. For a short time, the front page was 20 stories, my guess is to achieve the same effect. Everyone knew this day would come, which is why it

Unfortunately, having seen "The Social Network", I can't help but read a lot between the lines here. And it's mainly in a voice that's both Machiavellian and threatening... Maybe the level of enthusiasm is all positive and innocent: But re

Interestingly, Mozart got paid to write music for his patrons. Today, I don't see any bands being willing to write music for payment. Could I get Elton John to write a ballad for my S.O., for instance?

TL;DR: Startup entrepreneur gets swept up into the startup process, with a promising young company. Parents are less caught up in startup frenzy, and feel that they're also part of the education vs. startup decision. Family wins. Best of

Oracle is purposely hijacking the NoSQL term. Anyone who Googles for NoSQL will now find that it's an actual Oracle product, giving the appearance that every other 'NoSQL' DB is simply a knock-off. Pretty evil, IMHO.

Also, have a look at ETF (exchange traded funds) that are 'short'. These give you a short exposure to the underlying, while having similar trading costs to regular equities.

On the dating front, just accept that the 'money set' are people who don't want to date you, and you probably don't want to date them either. But even after subtracting them out, there are a whole lot of other interesting people in NYC. Bu

What NYC needs is a few local cash-outs for entrepreneurs (without them having to move to SV to do so). And then those entrepreneurs to reinvest in local startups. That's the positive reinforcement loop that takes place in SV, and I think

If they really wanted to encourage startups, they should allow 'employment at will' (like one can do in the US). Theoretically, someone would be paid a little more for the risk that they could be fired at any time for no compensation. OTOH

An interesting thought experiment is to do a rough-and-ready valuation on real-estate in your area : and see how much (say) Bill Gates could buy. For instance, $60Bn doesn't buy very much of Manhattan. It's rather disappointing really.
