I am not trying to score points for any side, all of these projects can and do share code when it's practical and useful to do so. There is no "exclusivity", I'm sure you know that most of these licenses in use are compa

That seems dismissive and I don't know why you would be hearing that. If there is a way to do this that you think would not qualify as an excuse, then you should mention it, otherwise both of us are stuck to what we are limited to by t

Sorry to hear that but I think on some level it is personal. I have never experienced any of what you're talking about, everyone I've talked to has been pretty respectful and open to collaboration. It's a large project so exp

There actually are a good number of paid contributors from small companies, and also a good number of volunteers too. That's what I have seen. Don't feel discouraged if your first contributions didn't make it in, GNOME is a b

Please avoid such hostility, open source is a team sport and we are all on the same team, even projects that do things in ways that may be not immediately useful to you or I. That kind of hostility is what leads to open source people burnin

I'm not sure what that has to do with the Unix philosophy, Windows also has a lot of APIs between subsystems.

Yes, part of it is the inhibitor API although IIRC there are some other parts. GDM and GNOME share the same implementation of this API so they should at least do the right thing, not sure about other desktops and login managers. Edit: The o

I have no idea about some of those other desktops, but all the basic moving parts are mostly necessary: - logind because you probably still want lid/sleep events to work when at a VT - gdm because you probably still want lid/sleep

By default I think the simplest model is to just use references, that should work if you don't move anything into the async task.

AFAIK the win32 API is kept backwards compatible by doing exactly as we describe, shipping older versions of the system libraries and automatically using them when it's detected that an application needs them. So it's the same thi

I'm still not sure I understand, it sounds like a solution exists and both Steam and Flatpak are working towards it. I don't see why nvidia can't also do the same things. I hope you can see that "keep libraries backwards

I keep hearing people say that, but how do you propose we write software that has no bugs and does everything perfectly right the first time? That seems impossible.

IME, using reference counts there is also not a good idea. In practice I think it's better to treat async tasks just like goroutines and then use channels to communicate.

It is actually not straightforward to switch the code. In general, you cannot really just swap out a GUI toolkit, that influences the design of the entire program. If there are good security focused libraries that work here, and there is a
