How do they know where to go? How can they find Tonga or the Sargasso Sea unerringly in the vastness of the ocean?

I haven't played Rogue, but I've played a lot of Moria, Nethack, and AdoM. Those are what I think of when I hear "Roguelike", although even AdoM might be stretching it a bit with its massive non-random outdoor area.

What do you mean by "carry over"? Even in Nethack, you can find the graves of previous characters.

Yeah, the word "roguelike" seems to have rapidly lost its meaning these past couple of years.

Well, one issue with the app store solution at my workplace is that you can still download anything, even if you can't install it. And executables can still be executed even from your downloads folder. Or your personal bin folder. So p

Getting a real diagnosis is a big obstacle. Waiting lists are ridiculous, and the medical landscape is confusing. In recent years, I've become increasingly convinced that I've got ADHD. Before, I used to think I've got Asperg

There is an app store here too, but lots of vital dev tools simply aren't in there. We should probably make sure they get added.

Good point. The current security model of desktop OSs sucks. I was recently reminded of this by an issue at work. I'm used to devs having admin rights on their laptops, but here they closed that down: you have to request admin rights f

I would certainly hope junior developers don't rely too much on AI; they need the opportunity to learn to do this stuff themselves.

The idea that there are even AI metrics to hit... AI should not be a goal in itself, unless you make and sell AI. But for anyone else, you need to stick to your original quality and productivity metrics. If AI can help you improve those, th

It's important to understand the difference between easy and simple. It's easy to add complexity, it can sometimes be hard to keep things simple. But with that in mind, I do agree that a lot of systems are more complex than they n

I use IntelliJ with the Copilot plugin, using Claude. My employer has a big subscription for everything from Microsoft, and that includes Copilot, so that's free for me. But somehow Copilot also gives me access to Claude. No idea how t

The issue here is: should the newspaper with hitman classifieds be banned from kiosks, or should you go after the actual owners and advertisers and put them in prison? Hiding the crime from public view doesn't make the crime go away.
