Deduplication is a hard problem: what constitutes a "dupe" is somewhat arguable. My first approach just used metadata, but that doesn't aggregate the files stripped of their original metadata, like what you get from a Google

It may be a reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_three_(computer_progra... The idea is that you grit your teeth and let code be deduplicated twice (but no more), rather than immediately DRYing up code, so

Unfortunately, Google doesn't support good API read access of your files: pulling them down via their API results in several bits of metadata being stripped (including GPS coordinates). (If someone knows otherwise, I'd love to be

I'm writing PhotoStructure to do exactly this task! My to-do list is still long, but I'm plugging through it and I believe PhotoStructure already has the most robust tag extraction, inference, and image deduplication heuristics ar

Can confirm. SD cards can fall in 5-7 years due to cell voltage drift, and unplugged SSDs can have bitrot that overwhelms onboard ECC in less than a year. HDDs don't fare substantially better, though: bitrot can happen in under a decad

Howdy! I'm an early digital photography adopter (1998), so I started feeling this pain a while back. After the fourth photo service I had migrated to went out of business (and Picasa was then cancelled), I realized I needed something t

Make sure that whatever solution you go with, that it puts your files into a sensible folder structure so you're not beholden to that solution forevermore. The idea of associating an audio commentary to an image or album is great: it&#

You're describing a "distributed filesystem with client-side whole-file caching". The Andrew File System (AFSv2) did this back in the 1990s. https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/OSTEP/dist-afs.pdf FWIW,

I feel your pain. Two different possible solutions: 1. Turn off automatic image conversion, and then retry copying over USB: it takes a while to convert HEIC to JPEG, and an eternity to convert HEIC to MP4. It's something like Settings

ExifTool handles zeroes in datetime strings (I had to add that support to PhotoStructure a couple months ago!), but I suspect most other applications will croak on those values. I'd also really like a way to identify very-rough dating.
