If you booted single-user or didn't have a graphical login manager, you'd see this on the console on SunOS 4 and earlier (80s and 90s, pre-Solaris). I think by the time Solaris (or even open look) rolled around, it had a graphical

I'm sorry, I should have clarified: as far as I know, mdadm on RAID1 with consumer-grade spinning rust will not be able to save you from bit rot (or at least I haven't seen evidence to that effect). I haven't tried on RAID6 (

I enjoyed docker compose as well (enough to use it for PhotoStructure), but was bit by breaking changes even when I had specified a version in my docker-compose.yml. It meant that a bunch of my beta users suddenly had broken PhotoStructure

RAID won't save you from bit rot, and after I added bit rot detection in PhotoStructure, I was surprised to see how many of my files on older spindles had succumbed to minor corruption. Using a filesystem that supports data scrubbing d

If you look at the CrashPlan drive reports, that doesn't seem to be their experience (and I don't know of a current, larger, public hard drive reliability report). It seems that newer models trend with priors from that brand, with

How fast does that setup run in practice? I have an odroid hc2 (which is a wholy different chipset than the h2plus, I know), and that's about as pokey as my pi4.

PNG is always a lossless format. You can only control the level of compression. There are tools that let you re-encode a PNG after applying a lossy filter, but the PNG still encodes it losslessly.

TIFF is just a image container. I'd make sure when you save as TIFF, you specify a bit depth equal to your source image, and a format that isn't lossy (like standard JPEG). If you've got a standard sRGB 8-bit-per-channel imag
