I don't understand the appeal of these articles. There was another one a while ago that had a quote like, "I asked someone with 10 years of PHP experience what they thought of the Rails project they had been working on for the last few mon

I discovered this last week and almost instantly donated some cash to the developer. It has easily already saved me hours of manual effort.

My major gripe about Hacker News is that the time you make a post disproportionately affects its likelihood of making it to the front page.

I circumvent this by having a gmail account and an apps account, forwarding everything from the apps account to my gmail, and using the "Send mail as" feature to complete the illusion.

How is Battle.net these days, anyway? People were howling in outrage because of some kind of identity thing that Blizzard decided to do. Is it usable? Fun?

I feel like I get $60 of value per year out of playing online with my friends, having voice chat, fooling around with avatars, and particularly, downloading free games and demos from XBL Arcade. No complaints here.

Lately I've been following an approach that I suppose you could call "strict duck-checking in danger zones." I define a very lightweight "contract checker" and drop it into the beginning of methods that make a lot of assumptions about thei

Many modern televisions have D-SUB connectors; if you have a desktop that is near your TV, you can also get a second video card and simply connect it to your TV like any other monitor. Even if you only have DVI-out, you can convert lossles

At its worst, Hacker News has continued to impress and inspire me as vastly superior in quality and consistency compared to other online communities.

I found vim's configuration to be pretty natural, in that the bare editor worked fine for me, but as I became better-versed in its use, I would run into small things that made me think, "Hmm, I wish I could do this," or "Hmm, I wish this fe

Thank you--this is a good explanation of why the parentheses don't work on anonymous functions: Ruby's immediate calling essentially forces you to choose between "objects that you can call like methods" and "objects that you can easily pass
