Blackmail is for mid-level aspiring politicians who get bigger than their britches. A presidential candidate is a smiling face that carries the decision-makers' platform.

That's true, but it just highlights how bizarre and arbitrary high-culture is. I don't know how to say "Hey everybody, we're all going to get laid!" in Italian while preserving Rodney Dangerfield's voice.

The idea that the product is disconnected from the state is laughable at this point. I mean, we have military jet flyovers and gargantuan flags. But that's football--baseball, America's old pastime, relies on big families, open

They can only get away with it because they know most of their customers wouldn't do their own repairs anyway. In 1950, they'd say "Screw you then, I'll make the part in my garage."

This varies greatly by region. In Ohio, athletics are mostly dominated by single-gender Catholic high-schools, and they have the facilities to match.

Who's to say they haven't been doing exactly that for years? That would answer a whole lot of unresolved questions.

Actual opera fans are frothing at the mouth right now at the suggestion that Cats is opera. But this idea that opera is stuffy high culture is the same mistake people make with Shakespeare--it's pop culture, just removed from its conte

My theory is that it's because the end-user is less familiar with how household goods and machines work than in prior generations. With chips in everything, it's hard to tell at a glance what's good and what's rubbish;

One defining feature before the last couple of years is that they were always open 24 hours. They are also nice if you are craving strong coffee that smells like grilled onions.

It's been a few years, but I thought NY's subway voice was more sarcastic-sounding than other cities, and I figured that was because it was more effective. "Please stand clear of the closing doors (dumbass)".

I thought Pentagon City was right across from the Pentagon, and Crystal City was in this no-man's-land after the immediate Pentagon services stopped but before you really got into walkable Arlington.

While that's true, my memory of Crystal City is that it's meant for you to get inside the complex first, and then walk six city blocks or so.

For context, is Crystal City much more than an enormous mall/office building and a Metro stop? It's not great to have an accessibility failure, but that doesn't strike me as a place where it would make that much difference.

One of the most prominent customs of Americans is that we pretend to have no culture or customs on a national level. Of course, we actually do project a culture, and whenever that becomes apparent, many Americans are unhappy, because that

While the structure of the human-filled government positions was indeed rebuilt, there was a continued reliance on English common law, to the point that I believe early after the revolution courts still used English cases as precedent. Wha

There will probably be less porn in 50 years than now just because moral fashions change, and it would be difficult for there to be more of it. I see the challenge to it coming more from the left than from the right, though.

Maybe my perception is a little off, but I think of the Romans as having outsourced their "high" culture from the very moment they could afford it--formal education, medicine, and theater were for Greek slaves to do. A dignified
