Some older near-the-city-center suburbs of US cities have the same phenomenon. There are sometimes quirks like entire neighborhoods where all the houses have a different stained-glass window because there was a stained-glass guy nearby whe

I've heard the argument from the other end from time to time, that Western food aid is bad because it distorts markets for food producers in the destination country (by making local farmers unable to stay in business). But I think thi

Did McDonald's internationally do better over the last 20 years than it did in the US? Between 1990 and now, it seems to me that it lost a lot of cultural ground domestically, (and so did Pizza Hut, Gorbachev commercial and all). The

I always thought of micropayments as the equivalent of buying a bag of quarter-inch mini-Oreos. It can be advertised as a way to diet, and some people eat just one and do fine, but the business model only works because brains are bad at su

The depressing part was that a globalist billionaire (and not a particularly conservative one historically) was perceived as the only viable option conservatives had to disrupt the existing party cronyism. In 1992, that option was Ross Per

Is it worse in that respect than regular "pick-one, winner-take-all" voting? Ironically, it might be the lesser evil.

The DHS was billed as a solution to the problem of the FBI, CIA, and other organizations not communicating with each other. The scope creep had already started happening decades before; this just made it more efficient.
