I was never a promising player, but playing sax in the school band was just boring. When it came time to go to high school the choice was marching band or jazz band. Both sounded miserable so I quit.

I am not so convinced that 2023 will entail a “soft” anything. The average American is financed to the gills and layoffs are coming. I went to cash in my taxable accounts and am buckling down for the worst.

In aggregate it would be hard to say. But at the extremes I think you could argue that social media is worse. For example, getting severely depressed and killing yourself as a teenager due in large part to a distorted sense of reality from

I was at the beach the other day, beautiful weather, perfect sunset, etc. The number of people staring at their phones was very high. The number of teenagers, especially girls, taking pictures and seemingly staging events was downright depr

I wish I could just stick with a language forever and thoroughly master it. What did Bruce Lee say about it? He didn’t fear the man that practiced 1000 different kicks. He feared the man that practiced the same kick 1000 times. Something li

Apple is badly, badly in need of a “code red” style freeze on new features for macOS and iOS. Even very basic things which should be rock solid are not. I just had a kernel panic when copying files to an smb mount. No issue when I do the sa

I find it interesting that many different philosophical traditions all seem to discover an ascetic ideal in one way or another. Maybe "ideal" is not the right word. I think if you really examine your own life and existence one wou

I just can’t get over using environment variables for this type of stuff. An attacker can bootstrap a lot just from compromising an ssh login. Platforms like JWS had the right idea. You used tokens in config files and the platform vault kne

I agree 100%. It can help some people, but it's not a panacea. I have known people that went to therapists for years and didn't really make any progress. And some people arguably get worse. For example, what's the benefit of

I read the article on Schopenhauer and Marcus Aurelius. Pretty amusing I have to admit, but a lot seems to be lost in the process. That is to say, you could come away with some wrong impressions of the subjects covered. At least as far as I

People are complaining about the idea that the developer is ultimately the owner of any service they wrote. I don’t see how this is even controversial. Consider the case where a SRE is responsible for 5 or 10 such systems. They could never

I’m more concerned with skillset deflation. It’s super common to run in to people with 10 years experience, a nice resume, and an impressive title that can’t do much of anything.
