Even amateurs will notice the difference between a "perfect" pour over from a $50 grinder and a $200 grinder. The GP clearly does not own a V60 :) Above the $200 range really only matter for espresso. Manual brews don't need

How can we make better operating systems if devices are locked down? How can hobbyists keep the hardware useful when the manufacturer no longer cares? Devices must remain open for the kernel programmers and hardware hackers of tomorrow to f

Caddy is amazing. I accidentally wiped my fairly complex nginx configuration (yay apt-get purge) and have been so spoiled by Guix that I did not care about etckeeper or ansible on my one Debian server. Anyway I decided to try Caddy to quick

For hiking OSM blows Google out of the water. I'm surprised how detailed OSM is with random forest trails and shortcuts, resting spots, viewpoints, etc. The main thing I use Google Maps for is searching for stores etc in cities. I hope

What do you mean? Can you point to examples of societal collapse similar to this? AFAICT this is a novel problem. Personally I think the logical conclusion will be to fair use/copyleft everything, but that seems like a win for society.

Education has been in dire need for reform a long time. The writing was on the wall even with the advent of the Internet. We now have supercomputers in our pockets and hyperintelligent assistants at our fingertips. Chesterton could certainl

Not needing root is a game changer. Another benefit is that "traditional" package managers may litter your system with configuration files and post-install scripts (for the software you are installing and all of its dependencies),

Not exactly a fork, and you are probably aware, but there is at least one Nix-like system with full supply chain integrity and rigid packaging standards. https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2020/securing-updates/

Personally I don't visit particular episodes, but rather a feeling, a drive towards a specific emotional reaction. And try to think back to, recall, when that feeling first started, and then imagine meeting myself at an age where I e
