I think Matt Stoller makes some good points on this sort of topic. https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/why-cant-america-handle-t... https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/why-new-york-city-is-on-t...

The subsidies mentioned are federal transportation (highway) spending. Without that (or even better with it redirected into mass transit) the prospect of commuting into the city by car becomes a lot less economical.

I don't know about SV specifically, but a majority of the homeless in LA County have been here for more than 10 years and weren't homeless when they arrived. Seems like the rising cost of housing is one of the causes of homelessne

Some do. I pay to remove ads from the wunderground app which IBM claims means they don't sell my data. Not sure if believe them, but at least I don't see ads. https://i.imgur.com/TlOo07T.png

This whole thread is about California's roadmap. LA County is something like 25% of the state. Why stop at the USA? With people moving between places, outbreaks anywhere will matter until there's a reasonable vaccine/treatmen

It's way too early to assume that the current pandemic will cause such drastic changes to society. Even if it turns out to be close to the damage as the 1918 flu, that was still more than 100 years ago. My guess is that the rise in rem

My guess: non trivial to do it safely and non trivial to get accuracy rates you'd get from a professional lab. Doing all those things by hand also takes some time. Thinking back to my days in a lab at MIT, sample to PCR probably took a

If you know of initiatives you care about (like SB 50 for example), look for groups pushing that. If you're on twitter, the twitter networks usually bridge cities. I follow a lot of LA area YIMBY groups, but get some cross pollination

To some degree this is a zero sum game. Bus lanes are pretty magical in that they make the buses faster than the cars and reduce road capacity to reduce induced demand. Plus they're cheap because the infrastructure is just paint.
