From my observation I believe that a lot of educated and less educated people don’t really care if something is fake as long it confirms their opinions. They don’t want to let go of their “facts” although they know they are wrong.

I think the problem is that if we can’t trust video then there is really nothing visual left we can trust. Until now you could at least trust video recordings to some degree. Not sure if that a good thing or not.

All the apps I have seen have terrible search. In Google I can type in "xxx Street Burbank" and will get a result. In OSM I have to go through state, city, zip and know all that stuff. Much worse than google Maps.

You are the guy who warned about anthropomorphizing Larry Ellison, right? So true and so fun.

I still don’t understand why they implemented this but it works very well. I wish OSM maps had the same level of offline search and routing.

I think is just another example where we got a short term benefit from breaking societal norms but may suffer long term. Strong family bonds can be very confining so it's often liberating to weaken them. But then you also lose that su

It’s a little easier to set direction if you don’t have to ask everybody. There is a reason why successful companies are basically dictatorships .

I think the baby boomer generation did a lot of damage by eroding social systems and piling up deficits. But the question is whether whoever follows will do any better.

“We're basically waiting for the boomers to die off at this point, before being able to fix the shit they left behind.” Don’t rely on the next generation to be any better. The brightest and best of the new generation are busy selling a

I think that’s a pretty natural progression. A well run dictatorship is probably superior to a democracy in the short term so it’s always tempting to give up freedom in exchange for efficiency. The question is how long the dictatorship can

As far as I know these things are designed for scientific value and not for producing cool pictures for viewers. I am sure they are getting the best possible value for their budget with whatever they designed.

You should be happy that they don’t measure it in “baseball fields” or something like that. That’s how usually things are reported.

"the whole humanity together becomes a superorganism that could be seen as thinking its own thoughts." And at this scale it's already impossible to comprehend the motives of this organism.

Rationally this is correct. But when you talk to people and all inner alarm bells go off it's really hard to stay relaxed. That's how it is for me. I know pretty well that people mostly don't think badly of me but the thought

Does the whole sector thing still make sense for SSDs? Do they still work by sector or can every byte be addressed directly?

Totally agree. A career should be a constant mix between learning and working. But only a few get the chance to learn on the job and going to school while working on a job (and making needed money) is very hard.

I always think what the perspectives of a being that could live for millions of years and had the computing power and memory and sensors of all of Earths machines would be. I don’t think we could even comprehend the thoughts of this being.
