I don't agree with the point made regarding having to build ones own software. I've found I've done as much "./configure && make && make install" on OSX as I have done with Linux -- if I'm using something that hasn't been up

At this point my dream development PC is anything that doesn't have the company mandated McAfee virus scanner and LANDesk spyware/inventory management software. Although it would be nice to have the fastest harddrives, quickest processors,

Most definitely. The vendors for the platforms I target only support C and C++ so and the software I write has fairly strict cycle budgets, often measured in microseconds and sometimes in nanoseconds, so regardless of what language I would

I use Consolas on Windows and Inconsolata on Linux, somewhere around the 9-10 pt size. Basically small enough so that I can get two 120-column+ editor windows side-by-side on a 1920px wide (24") display while big enough to not hurt the eyes

A few of my other favorite compiler tricks: MSVC's /showIncludes displays a list of what files include what files in tree form. Very handy for figuring out where that added Windows.h include is which killed your build turnaround time :). Wi

It all depends on the type of C++ you are writing. It is such a vast language that usage patterns can range anywhere from C90 plus declare-where-used and single line comments to something that in practice isn't a whole lot different than C#

Jones Forth is awesome because it isn't just a great way to learn Forth but also a great way to learn assembly programming. A couple years ago I did a rather crude, hurried, and unoptimized port of Jones Forth to the Cell processor's vector

For game development you can safely avoid dealing with exceptions and RTTI. You can probably avoid most template magic, too. Most game developers use C++ as C-with-classes and generally keep the inheritance and OOP-ness fairly simple.

An acquaintance of mine years ago worked for Purolator Courier up in Canada and he said that if you wanted your package treated well you would be best off marking it "CONTAINS LIQUIDS". The last thing the handlers want to do is have to mop

The response of the developer (Andreas Schwab) is one of the most unprofessional I've seen in a very long time, but then I have a particular loathing for bugs that manifest as subtle runtime peculiarities. Technically he's correct in that i

At work I have an HP xw-series workstation sporting two quad core Xeons and 12gb of RAM. I have a 24" main display and a 19" secondary, both Dells, hooked up to a fantastically terrible Quadro NVS290 video card. It runs Windows 7 and my pri

A technology doesn't have to be recent to still be applicable. INI files have been around a long time but they are a well understood mechanism for storing confuguration settings and have mature, well debugged, components for handling them.

Writing shared-state thread safe code is very hard to get right especially in the context of large systems. When you move beyond safely coordinating mutation of shared resources there are many other headaches that can pop up, like priority
