HN truly is becoming worse off, as can be seen from comments here like yours. Take nearly any traditional way of thinking and realize that in order to have changed it, it began with such commentary like this article . The fact you call it “

Ha, I’ve done the same thing. GPT-4 is like a super nice intern that knows a ton but doesn’t get the big picture.

Yes, you'd need to specify the subject of the sentence as you did in your second example. My rule for students is basically, "If you have the option to be re-specify the thing you're talking about, do it." That's a

I find it interesting that most of these tactics can be summarized into: "write clearly and provide ample information." I have a side business for ACT/SAT prep. I teach English, and often have to remind students about sentenc

Dude, this isn't "normal". "I'm most lonely when I'm alone with my wife" -- that is not healthy or good. I don't think your situation is applicable to the OP. As a counter, I feel most comfortable whe

How do you honestly function in day-to-day life with such a mindset? Should I forgo my modern living entirely because of my carbon footprint? Where do you draw the line?

How is this relevant, though? People continue to claim LLMs are just parrots. But then there is never a solid rebuttal to how humans are different.

I am curious how the author of this post would define (or recognize) "thinking abstractly". And I'd ask what humans do that suggests any ability to "reason abstractly". I'm not saying we don't, but I am sa

You guys are cracking me up lol most comments here must have the smartest damn 5-year olds in mind! “It’s simple ! Just tokenize the context and allow differentiated hash maps to best map the embeddings matrix. Duh!”

So many comments here are of the belief that "it's not the phones, it's the doom of the real world! Climate change, inflation, recession -- this is all bad for mental health of our kids." And I just want to ask if any of

Your comment has given me pause with regard to my expectations of online discussion -- thank you for that. Well put. Also, great bit here: "some tech communities are naturally much more _about_ bringing forward the best parts of the te

I will say that GPT-4 is miles ahead of 3.5 The best use for it is to provide a sample of code, then ask why an issue is occurring within those few hundred lines OR ask how to add / start new functionality from that sample. I will agre

Understandable -- if I could ask, then, what might be something that is (or has been) gamechanging? Are gamechangers known to be such upon arrival? (That's a real question -- I might argue they aren't known immediately. )

I'd disagree about the 6th-grade level note; would argue freshman in college, maybe. But that's beside the point: How do people not extend the timeline a bit? It often feels like the release of the internet, but instead of people

In a nutshell: The "inside" of an LLM is a black box in that we don't know how an input arrives to an output. We know some general ideas ("it predicts the next thing"), but not the detailed route to get to the outpu

Every single retort of “these machines aren’t smart or intelligent” requires answering the question, “what is intelligence”? I struggle to see how GPT-4 is not intelligent by any definition that applies to a human.

And how does it work, then? Everyone shrugs and says, “nope, humans are different”. I’ve commented about 100 times recently asking for detail as to how human language / thought works, yet have not seen an answer.
