Is there any way to disagree with Helen and not be misogynistic in your view? How would that look?

Oh, cmon. Why must people reach like this? How about we look at credentials, merit, and consensus as opposed to “what gender are they?”

Where is this blind trust for the board coming from? The board provided zero rationale for firing Sam.

No, I think you're mistaking my tone. I was genuinely curious, because it's rare to see someone with a sure view on this mad saga! And I wanted to learn a bit more from the somewhat-less-popular side (I do think there is an odd cu

98% of employees legitimately signed the letter wishing Sam to be reinstated, so I’m not sure how media or investors play in to that at all.

Dude, you’re all over this thread and have such a strange bias against Sam and the current employees. Can I ask, out of genuine curiosity, why you find the board to be OK in this situation and why you find Sam / the employees behind hi

I think it’s wierd the dismissive way many folks in this thread speak about it all. “Sam isn’t important. Employees are weirdos. The board is just fine. Everyone calm down.” That’s more wierd than anything happening on Twitter.

Can literally anyone provide even a 0.001% plausible sounding reason as to why this all was started in the first place? Nothing makes sense.

I often worry that I’m under qualified for my work. But seeing how this board manages a $90,000,000,000 company, and is this silly/naive, I now feel a bit better knowing many people are faking it.

On Friday, the overwhelming take on HN was that Ilya was “the good guy” and was concerned about principal. Now, it’s kinda obvious that all the claims made about Sam — like “he’s in it for fame and money” — might apply more to Ilya.

Is there anything that would persuade you this isn’t some sneaky media frenzy orchestrated by Altman?

You are 100% missing something. You don’t see the current value nor potential of what these LLMs are capable of. They are as “dumb” as they will ever be right now. To act like it’s just a chat bot is the silliest take.

Thank you -- I saw the same thing and it's about the only thing that makes sense. But why would he leave OpenAI to run for president?! He has zero chance, unless (here comes my tinfoil) OpenAI has made something dangerous / life-

If you Google Sam, the search result showing his Twitter handle says, "I am running for president in 2024 as a Democrat". Is this why?

Ask HN: How do you escape, or better handle, the rat race?

Good grief. So what is thinking, then? Can you prove that humans aren’t just predicting what comes next given a series of inputs ?

And so, what do you think reasoning is? Or how would you know if something can reason or not ?

What does it mean to understand?

How is this in any way some retort to the claim that LLMs don’t understand something? I could ask the same questions to a child, and they’d respond with equally bad takes. Is the child incapable of understanding ?

We know exactly what an LLM does? How does that differ from a brain?

And generally, people like yourself make opposite claims with equally no backing. What does it mean to understand something? To think? How is a human any different than predicting the next “thing” given a series of inputs?

And what would it look like is something were capable of truly “understanding”?

Ugh, again with the “they don’t understand”. What does it mean to understand something, even?
