But the programming language is token-oriented.

It depends on the language. At least for me as a Haskell programmer, the arguments are not really valid. * The operators do indeed mean the mathematical symbols * Haskell does not support unicode in operators normally. The operators are asc

In that sense, HAVING and WHERE being different is basically a "free" subquery without allowing subqueries. One inner σ (WHERE) and one outer σ (HAVING). If subqueries are allowed, then you don't need that.

It's not redundant. As you point out: selecting rows _before_ aggregation and _after_ are different beasts. You can't exclude rows from aggregation with HAVING.

Proper union types are really hard if you want to do anything more than check. Once you're into inference territory, this gets really hard. Look at Haskell's faux union Either. It should be true that Either a a = a but of course,

Maybe you could periodically give some remote control command through one of the WebOSTV python libraries. Needs networking though. Alternatively, an Arduino/ESP that sends a useless IR signal.

I'm pretty sure that SmallCheck also doesn't try out every constructor for Integer.

QuickCheck generates its own test cases and possible shapes. More importantly, it tries all possible constructors of a type (or a reasonable number). So you're reasonably confident that you tried a lot of "shape-cases".

As there are various degrees of "not normalized", this was a very valid question (and answer). SQL databases do indeed work with data not in Boyce-Codd-Normal-Form. :D

That was not the point. There was a time where the PEP specified that "python" means "python2" and it was indeed possible to have no "python" but still a Python (3) installation.

PEP 394 (which is now superseeded) clearly states that "python" shall invoke python2 and not python3 https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0394/ "The python command should always invoke Python 2

If you're living in limbo where "python" still means "python2", which isn't installed, as opposed to "python3", then this wouldn't work. Or theoretically also the other way around.

Only if you want to teach that. An introduction to programming might very well skip over static typing checks.

We use java in the database programming course with jdbc. We use eclipse and maven and I give a 5-minute introduction and a boilerplate, after the students used a web-based java ide in the previous year. I will not subject my students to ma

There is no objective truth. Especially not for every author and every topic. Even when trying to represent controversy, the problem of false balance is quite real. Maybe we differ on the definition of "political alignment", but t

What do you think happens with the money? It's not burned. Ideally, the project also employs people that use their money to exchange it for goods and services, which in turn might make some children not go hungry. Consumption is not ba

I believe the stark difference is, that a private company can spend what it earns , while the budget of government agencies or the military is basically arbitrary (committee-decided). Usually we would weigh agency spending against the value

Prolog and side-effects are a really unfortunate pairing. What I would love is when backtracking over a side-effect, that effect would be taken back. With transactions that might even be possible. As it stands, quering (pseudocode) "co

With recursive common table expressions it is really straightforward. You just have to manually stratify your datalog program to find out the order for the CTE. And then you just write down all the rules. edit: As long as queries aren'
