In the sentence, "good" is a noun. You can say "deliver ..." or "achieve positive results", but why use the longer latinate words? It just makes you look like you're trying to look smarter than you are.

There's the old joke about finding an SO. Attractive, intelligent, available: pick any two. I recently realized that with programming languages, it's similar, but not quite the same. Runs fast, has libraries, isn't totally frikkin brainde

Duh, I meant local maxima , of course -- at least, that's what those drivers are trying for. What they get most of the time are more like minima, of course.

Pretty sure transmission type has nothing to do with it -- traffic is stop and go in plenty of places where most cars have manual transmissions. I'm increasingly convinced that it's due to so many drivers optimizing for local minima, at the

I left Melbourne in 2002, and finally visited again in 2009. The effect of seven years of sustained prosperity was palpable in many ways, but none more so than the number of new cafés. I guess it's the sort of change you don't notice so m

I think marketing's only part of the Economist's success. It's certainly true that editorially and, uh, advertisorially a lot of what the Economist does is not done to primarily inform its readers, but rather to play to their aspirations.

In economics, there's a distinction between the normative and the positive. The former describes what ought to be and the latter describes what is . The concept seems relevant here. Operators ought not block mail solely due to some R

We obviously aren't throwing out SpamAssassin just because a few problems pop up now and then. I did. In 2002 or 2003, they made a change which caused my then-users to lose mail. I can't remember the details now (something to do with re

Those were good ones indeed, but let's not be too narrow. For example, division of labor is a common topic discussed. (An economics program! And division of labor!? No effin way!) For those of us trying to get a business going, it's pro

Paying to receive calls is annoying at first blush, but it does have at least one benefit: you're far more callable. With other systems, low level employees at many businesses simply won't be able to. (I've seen this first hand in Austral

Ditto. We also have a wiki and a tumblr site where we post immature nonsense. We all (except one of us) used to work at the same place, but now we're geographically and employmentologically spread out.

When I read on tech blogs that Kindle is a goner, I think these people must not read very much. Yeah, pretty much. It is snobby and rude to say it that way, but being snobby and rude myself I'm fine with that. In fairness, while e-ink de

Oftentimes, but not always. If John picked it up and it just broke (due to being fragile, I suppose) he could just as reasonably say "se me rompió" (note where the accent goes, by the way) and we might translate that is "it broke on me". (
