Fair enough. Actually, today I sort of wanted redirects so I could change some URLs on my S3-hosted blog. Another easier solution to this would be hosting with a service like http://nearlyfreespeech.net . They're pay-by-usage like AWS, but

I think this depends on how you use gmail. I mostly read, reply, and archive. Sparrow is really good for this, but not very good at say labeling or search.

The title is riffing off of the other two posts I mentioned at the top of my post. Regardless, all of these lists are personal opinion and limited by resources and current technology. I prefer portability over speed, for example.

Thanks. Pretty much all the tools I listed should work for PHP as well.

Thanks! I've actually tried Tower but I prefer the simplicity of Gitbox's UI. If you like Tower, you should check out SourceTree ( http://www.atlassian.com/software/sourcetree/overview ). It's free from the Bitbucket people.

Right, if you write something akin to Jekyll it will work fine. However, I think most people would probably be trying to learn a framework like Rails or Django if they were writing a blogging engine to learn a new language/framework.

Yes -- if you're comfortable with the command line and a scripting language, you can set up a script to handle your static blog. However, I suspect most people who want to blog don't have these skills or don't want to spend the time messing

Using a platform like Tumblr makes a lot of sense, but lots of people still don't do this as evidenced by all the stories on HN that link to overloaded servers.

While this is a great learning experience, it is hard to write a blog engine that will stand up to traffic spikes on the first try. If your goal is learning a new language or framework, this is a great idea. If your goal is to have a reliab

I agree. The proposed options seem too weird to be accepted easily. If you just started using one in your writing, people would think it was a typo. I don't think there's a downside to just using "they".

If you're on a Mac, you'll need to install gawk (at least I did on 10.7). Probably the easiest way to do this is with homebrew[1]: brew install gawk [1] If you don't know about homebrew, check out https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew
