I'm a student in the current batch of Hacker School. I wrote a testimonial that is not up on the internet, yet, so I thought I'd reproduce it here. Hope you guys find it helpful. tl;dr: go. There are eight elements of Hacker School. Firs

Thanks a lot. I've added a hastily compiled quick start readme to the repo: https://github.com/maryrosecook/isla/blob/master/README.md It's not as complete as I would like, but I am working on it. Is that enough to get you started? I'm h

Hi everyone. I'm Mary and I am making Isla. It's exciting to see the language posted to HN, and great to see so much discussion. I agree with the people who say that a programming language that apes natural language can be frustrating. In

Thank you for your excellent feedback. Yes, andro.eventer is there to avoid polluting the owner object. However, your idea of passing andro to the behaviour's setup() method is a great one. I'm going to give it a try. The reason I require

Excellent point. I would normally do this, but I wanted to reduce the amount of indirection in the code as much as possible. But, it may still be worth doing so people aren't distracted by thinking "Wow, this girl should use constants".

I think the learning curve for emacs is a little bit to do with its unusualness, but mostly to do with figuring out how you and it work together. This latter is a long process of discovery.

The choice for devs at Ableton is Linux or Windows. The company has Macs, too, but not for primary development machines.

This series is fascinating. Loads of stories about weird hacks to make the graphics cleaner, to up the polygon count, to make the animation more cartoonish, writing a dialect of Lisp to define the gameplay. Related: an article about making

I would just write your next proper (non-toy) project in the language you want to learn. That way, you learn the language and you've made something.

That's a nice idea. The grid stuff is actually done by the Render Engine. If I remember correctly, it's a spatial grid implemented as an array of arrays where the indexes are the row/column numbers of the nodes.

Great. I'll check out the separating axis test, too - thanks. Incidentally, I believe The Render Engine, the framework I used, has just introduced support for this technique.

The recursive technique you talk about is a nice one I hadn't heard of - thanks. I actually find that collision detection does affect performance. For example, in Pistol Slut, when an exploding grenade throws out forty pieces of shrapnel,

Rather unusually, the issues covered by the media have actually been the most important ones. The battle over the privacy of information is far more important than the facts revealed by a small number of actual information leaks.

No, it does not. If you pay taxes here, you have to have health insurance. For a permanent employee, this is about 14% of your salary. All in, I pay about a third of my income in tax (which includes health insurance).
