There is a simple antidote to this problem, as long as you have 1) the source code to the compiler you suspect of being bad, and 2) a second compiler (binary only), written by someone who is not friends with the first one. For instance, if

I once read a about a small scale study on some super-duper speed reading method. By small scale I think there were like two participants. One was a an expert in the method. The other was the guy doing the study. There were 3 main findi

The original plan was to support it at least until 2015. Then they (sort of) extended it. So even according to the original plan, this release is not surprising. If we get another release one year from now, that will be interesting news.

There is no br every 40 chars. Instead, the whole thing is wrapped in a table cell of width 436.

I have an even wimpier computer (2GB ram, 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo). The start up time is large, and it will happily use a couple of hundred megs of RAM, but I never felt that it was too slow. Maybe I'm using an old version (5.1), but I dou

Lying to people is not allowed, because you're tricking them into paying you based on false data. Lying to programs is allowed, because you're tricking them into working properly when they would otherwise fail. The first browser

Imagine this. I'm using Cool-Lang version 2. Now Cool-Lang 3 comes out. It has lots of features that I want to use. If the new version is compatible with the old one, I download it and start using it. If not, I have to convert my

Oh. I thought you were objecting to the syntax highlighting. I'm inclined to agree with you about refactoring tools. Even so, I bet you that if Rust takes off, they will eventually exist.

Some languages should, some should not. Probably a language like Rust should. Asking that of Smalltalk may be too much. But every language can benefit from tooling, even if it doesn't need it. For instance, do you know of any langu

There is at least one good reason to do so. Imagine that you're installing an update and notice that your battery is so low it won't finish before it dies. Surely sleeping is better than allowing a loss of power? In the worst ca

Read the article. Not quite what you think. There is writing involved, but actual time "wasting" is definitely a key part of the curriculum :)

Undefined means: the implementation can choose to define it, or can choose to leave it undefined. The standard prefers implementation defined when it's cheap, but some times it's not.

That's usually the right answer, but you have to be careful. For instance, you say the car will break faster than a human could. But if it does, the human-driven car right behind it is in trouble.

If they only have a gig of RAM, why does iOS bother with 64-bit support at all? Doesn't that increase memory pressure due to all the pointers being twice as big?

sometimes, cool is enough :) I might actually want this though. C is much more convenient than TeX to code in, and yet sometimes you have no choice. Until now.

that's what error correcting codes are for :) If you design things to play nicely with the compression algorithm that's used by trying to stay within normal human vocal range and stuff, might be okay.
