Is this subreddit reliable? A cursory read of the comments left me with the impression that human-caused climate change is no big deal, and that makes me wary regarding whether other claims from there are to be counted upon.

Stands to reason that a modified glider will achieve the best efficiency characteristics. That is after all, practically speaking, the raison d'ètre for sailplanes.

This was a very fascinating read and elegantly generalizes some truths that I've been only vaguely aware of. History and warfare is more often in effect a brutal and bloody competition between societies' efficiency. This has impli

I never thought that the ethics of medical research could risk falling prey to the same traps of reasoning that cause short-sighted decisions in business - namely that easily measurable short-term concerns trump greater but less measurable

Almost none of the companies that IPO in the US today have even the remote possibility of yielding a 20X return, never mind 100X or more. At that stage, you'd usually rather want to go with an index fund. Most of the allure of early-

There is a definition in certain stock market indexes of a "small cap company" that actually means "big company". Mozilla is one of those.

This has been my thought since the first time I heard Mozilla was raking in cash with affiliate search. With some planning, they could have had a never-ending income and been beholden to no one. Anyone in here with insight in the decisionma

Yes, all those poor Tesla IPO investors who got misled by a loony are lining up for shareholder lawsuits and yelling for prosecution, due to the obviously financially irresponsible management of their investment. (Refresh my memory here - w

Tesla already changed global transportation, by dragging auto manufacturers kicking and screaming to make real investments in electric transportation. They've averaged a CAGR of 40% or so for the fast decade and have no intentions of

I don't think a country with space capability is seriously considering making orbit useless over censorship. That'd be like shooting yourself in the foot right after you've trained for a marathon, in order to ingratiate yours

The wipers have 5 modes: Off, 1, 2, 3, Auto. Auto will keep wiping as long as it figures there's water on the windshield. If you want a different speed, you need to go into the touchscreen. If you want a single wipe, you can press the

Don't see why you're downvoted for posting this. Certainly, satellites designed before the Space Shuttle would have to be very paranoidly designed to include a self-destruct mechanism, but it only takes a couple kilograms of explo

Index funds are strongly a momentum investment strategy. I don’t see this appreciated so often. But of course, a properly diversified index fund portfolio contains much more than just the S&P500. Mine has some thousand global stocks, on

Well, inflation is also absurdly low. The direct return on equity, globally, is around 5% for a pure stock portfolio. What is your basis for believing that the safe withdrawal rate will be less than half this, at less than 1.5%? That sounds

I think the central point here is that «assume that» is fine when working with a math problem, but can kill you in real life. If you’ve just lost two billion dollars, or killed 200,000 people in a preventable war, no one cares that the assu

Assuming no great growth isn't entirely reasonable when analyzing a company that has had a CAGR of greater than 50% for the last 8 years, and intends to continue. If you think that's the reality, you should go short in a big way.
