It was a fascinating find for me as well. Great example of modular design.

I used a IPS-screened Thinkpad T42 (1.5 GB RAM, compact flash card in place of HDD) + RAM-booted Tiny Core Linux + Non DAW for producing radio shows for my country's public broadcasting. The T42's sound card didn't work, so a

+1, I learned English by playing Leisure Suit Larry I-III [1]. Text adventures were really useful in this regard because you had to type in more or less correct sentences. Also, at the core they were built around dialogues, that is, spoken

I optimize PDFs for my e-reader with k2pdfopt [1]. Fascinating piece of cross-platform software with thousands of command line switches. :) Another solution that I used to use is cropping them with mutool [2], a helper for the MuPDF reader&

Just for the sake of it -- a great discussion about ed from 2012: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4120513 And a cheat sheet linked there: https://catonmat.net/ftp/ed.text.editor.cheat.sheet.pdf

Very interesting, I was not aware of this. I see what he/she meant, but I would add "sam without the mouse is not sam, but it is still superior to ed in many ways". :) A link to that discussion would be great (if you manage t

Yes, I read it and liked it. The "joking" eventually gets tiresome, though. Still a helpful book if one wants to grasp the basics of ed in 2020, though.

Indeed, the Plan9 ecosystem itself (including its Linux port, plan9port) is heavily built around GUI and a mouse. Sam alone, however, can be compiled for command line only, without X11 support under Linux. This has been done in the 9base pa

Sam also has a command line only mode, invoked with the '-d' switch ('sam -d filename'). This is just like 'ed', no graphics layer or mouse needed. But the command language is both simpler and more powerful IMO

Plan9's sam (sam -d for command line use) is a great improvement over ed, by the way. Homepage: http://sam.cat-v.org/ Paper by Rob Pike: http://doc.cat-v.org/plan_9/4th_edition/papers/sam

I've been worried about this as well. A lenghty Harvard blog post from 2018 indicates that a 8-hour 7am-3pm feeding period gave better health-related results than an 12-hour 7am-7pm feeding period. In other words, 'timing is key&#

I like Unplugged Woodworking. I think he is also from the British isles. Found him when I was googling for Roman workbenches; he built one. YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcO75TzblV9-_WqgXX1mNxg/vid... Blog:

This is anecdotal, but I recall reading somewhere (maybe in a foreword) that e.g. Luhmann's "Social Systems" (1984; English translation 1985) was composed this way in purpose. The reader was supposed to be able to start the b

Great list. I would like to add UbuWeb, a massive collection of hard-to-find avant garde art, movies and texts. Curated by hand by Kenneth Goldsmith. Online since circa 1996 (and I think he has also more or less kept the original layout).
