That’s a lot of presumptions. It may be as simple as noticing that teams with a higher attrition rate are more productive on average and faithfully treating that observation as a causal link. It may be successful in the short run, but that

if you are on mobile it doesn't matter. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. I'm not saying that I'm ditching the Twitter website for the native Twitter app. I'm saying that I'm ditching Tw

I think open standards address your issue just as effectively. You mentioned newsgroup readers and mail user agents, for example. The web apps that I enjoy using are the ones that enable real-time collaboration. I think that's where t

I'm not dismissing the utility of tags, and I like your idea. I'd definitely install it as an application and give it a go. I'm really addressing the argument that tags are a revolutionary change that should replace the direc

I still belong to a WhatsApp group, but I’m plotting a course out of the social media empire. We should still have web apps where they add value - I’m writing one at the moment - but I’ve reduced my reliance on Google Suite in particular an

> So your solution to organizing files... is more files? How would multiple files use the same "tag" under that scheme, without duplicating it everywhere? You could put the same file in multiple directories. You could have a fi

I was referring more to the web as a runtime for apps. YouTube is full of great content but the app on my TV is pretty rubbbish. The website’s not bad in fairness

Ripgrep will compile a list of all files in your home directory in seconds. Combine it with dmenu or fzf and you’ve got yourself a pretty handy search tool

I use it as a place to put files I’m working with in the moment. Once I’m done with them, I either file them away or delete them. Although I don’t use a desktop on Linux anymore, I still use the directory for that purpose.

I think we can safely assume that the answer to that question is “no” for most of the people in this thread complaining about the desktop!

I hope you’re right. Personally I think that epoch peaked with jQuery. I’ve been watching the culture of web development steadily descend from what you describe to whatever it is we have now. But software history is circular, so maybe those

I’ve thought about that, but for now I can manage with rsync. I’ll look at it again if I have to collaborate with non-technical people though.

This tagging idea resurfaces every few years. I have to confess I don’t really see where the revolutionary improvement is. Filenames are already namespaced tags and symlinks allow for multiple tags. Not quite the same thing, I know, but clo

I’ve been switching away from the web and back to native in a big way and it’s making my life much easier. The web sucks. It’s the worst part of modern computing by far. It’s like wading through treacle. Even this article took an age to loa

I don’t think you quite understand what security through obscurity means. It’s not an invitation to help malicious actors pen-test your system by publishing information about it.
