Looks great, but didn’t answer the question for me of why to learn this over TypeScript or Rust. The answer seems to be in the title: this of particular interest for those already interested in Lisp or Scheme.

A hack I use: run `strace someprog` and look for the system calls that open files. This works no matter how badly the thing is documented.

Yes, toe socks take longer to put on. Also, not normal socks squeeze your toes, give blisters or cause other problems for most uses. I always wear toe socks for very long runs or hikes, like > 2 hours, but don’t find the extra time to p

I don't know Rust well and was having trouble the finding the docs I needed, so I asked AI for help. Google Bard, I think. It had real difficulty producing code that ran and worked. The problem was that there were breaking API changes

I also ditched Ubuntu after using it for over a decade and went to Arch Linux, which Manjaro is based on. Seems to be a common migration story.

I didn't care much about one distro vs another until I found a lot of packages I wanted were packaged for Arch Linux and not Ubuntu Linux, and the Arch Wiki was better than Ubuntu's docs. And also, yes "Snaps" were annoy

You also need some form of window management, and if you like tiling windows, Linux has the most options by far.

I once evaluated using s3fuse for managing about 36 million images. The old storage model was on a filesystem so it was supposed to make a smooth transition to the cloud. AWS Premium Support wisely advised me against it, not just because of

Snap started sharing location data with a new third party, OpenAI, for what should be an optional feature without asking users if they wanted to share location data with OpenAI.

I’ll keep this mind the next time I’m stuck on a burning rooftop and trying to communicate with the rescue chopper. I only hope the pilot understands Semaphore!

I like the security features of Snaps would accept some trade-offs for that benefit, but Canonical started shipping a Snap of a browser with known issues like breaking media keys. Security improvements are welcome, but that was a feature th

I use a laptop stand at my desk, but a laptop chin helps to not bend the neck so much when the laptop is on a… lap.

It’s practically game over if an attacker has access to your laptop. They can for example install a keylogger and capture your master password for any password manager.

Right. You want regions to be fully independent, yet the software stacks they are running to be fully synchronized and consistent. So there’s a tension. If there’s a sleeper bug that wakes only after it has been rolled out to every region,
