Every once in a while for fun, I try to find as many good .com domains as I can. There are a lot of good ones out there. I've considered having a best available .com competition here, but think it might be considered wasteful, doing the wor

I think it really is that hard to prevent it from happening. Every organization/system is going to have vulnerabilities from time to time. If you are drawing the ire of those who want in, it's just going to be a matter of time. I really thi

That was difficult to read. That situation was a bummer, not soul-stealing. I wonder if the author understands how self-absorbed and rantish that article sounded to so many readers. I think she severely overestimated the gravity of the situ

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about my thoughts on this, -two posts actually: http://corpusdord.blogspot.com/2006/02/existence-and-non-exi... Basically, I was waxing on the idea of existence, and what it meant. Might be another ang

The head of the program was a cosmologist, actually. I know that she taught herself to code, as did the other two profs I worked for. -I think that had something to do with their attitudes. Also, it might have just been from a practicality

I quit LinkedIn a couple of days ago. I got a status update of some contact or other, and thought: "What is this? Why do I have this?" I feel much better not having something that felt so obligatory, yet so unlike me. These networks seem to

I am a pull-learner as well. My physics undergrad and grad courses occasionally required that we program in Fortran, -that's what our profs used. I once asked the head of our program why our degree didn't require any CS courses, but did req

It is a milestone, a worthy and notable achievement. I don't see that this post inferred otherwise. Actually, ycreject says: "Raising funding is only the beginning of this journey..."

ACCESS DENIED. Lol. I guess I don't have a problem with that triangle. I do find it funny that out of so many blocked sites at my workplace, Reddit is not... must be Redditors in ITD.

I think one thing that should be considered, is whether or not people can easily remember and spell the domain correctly after hearing it. A lot of referrals are still by word-of-mouth. There's a big difference between: "Hey check out Faceb

Agreed. And yet, you walk away better understanding how those nightmares can become reality. By chance, I picked up Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" from a sidewalk seller, and was struck by her ability to address so many parts of a whole. Afte

This is very tangential, but I just happened to finish the "Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman last night. If any HN military history buffs have not read it yet, do pick it up. Although about the opening of WWI, it provides some great insig

Not trying to be snide, but I don't understand what 'realism' means in this context. Personally, if a potential business partner told me that they were 'realistic' about strategy or risks or whatever, I would take it as a warning sign. No d

I would use this, most definitely. Sign me up. I don't think Google or Mozilla would do it. I think an interesting option would be to have a "what you can know about me" table in the browser that you could fill out. Location, interests, etc

One nice thing about HN, is that you occasionally stumble across the people that write the software you use. Thanks for VLC. And thank you for turning Zugo down. Priorities are everything.

Agreed. Facebook can't forever be what people want it to be. At some point, we will want something that is different enough, that FB can't adopt or morph into it.

I don't see why his argument, however weak it is, makes an argument as to whether or not banks 'robbed' the middle class. Oddly, he didn't mention that banks underwrote many educational loans. The whole article can be summed up as: "You thi

I think the idea is that this would be a one-way street. That once you start relying on ad sales, all future decisions would be colored by that reality. Since the impact of the ad(s) would be great, the effect on the evolution of Wikipedia

This was nice to read. I am teaching myself to program at the moment, just so I can build MVPs of some of the ideas I have. I doubt I'll ever be a great programmer, but that's not really my goal anyway. I only hope to build something that n
